Those numbers look pretty good.
The flatness of the curves means that picking the right gear and RPM is much easier, since there is almost no wrong answer. LOL

The aluminum head is a sure way to add power. The spark plug clearance is troubling.
I wonder if the 1/2 inch reach plugs with an extra crush washer would work.

Hey Mark, in the past I have seen you refer to “phosphateing” bare metal. What do you use and how and when do you use it? Do you use it on non rusted metal? Cast iron and steel? Do you primer over it? Thanks, Don

I have used two products the rust converter Permatex sells and Ospho both available at NAPA and yes prime over once completely dry. Only cast I used it on is the seat and tailgate hinges.

CHUG and I went Garage Saleing this morning. The town 4 miles away from me had 3-4 dozen sales in a town of 2500 people so great density.

AND I SCORED a Beautiful condition SNAP-ON Dwell Tach and matching Vacuum/Fuel Pressure gauge. The seller said both worked perfectly They look like they were very little ever used. The pair for $50

Comparing to eBay untested unit prices I did good not great but as the last Dwell tach I bought off eBay was said to be NOS and did not work at all. I'm pretty happy.

I also scored some large C Clamps and some Aluminum Tubing that will go well with my stock pile of materials.

And I made a super good deal on a Pair of Hoya Camera filters that the guy gave me both for $1.00 I'll sell for $30 and $10 if they aren't in better condition then the ones in my set in which case I'll sell those!

And I got to drive around for 3 hours in CHUG.

Yup
Perfect day here in the Willamette valley.
I took the Willys out on “patrol” for an hour or two.
We are going to have to get the Oregon boys out for a group ride one of these days.

OH it got better the wife came home from work early (she's not been feeling to well but nothing came be done about it) and took a nice long knap while I was out and about. When I got home she felt good enough to go to my company picnic about 45 miles away along the Santiam River (our boss has been converting one of our old gravel pits into a Company recreation area complete with a beach and a huge mountain bike trail for the kids)

So I got to do another about 90 miles and she chose the scenic route on the way home. Stopped by a local fruit and veg stand and picked up some Cucumbers and Tomatoes for a salad and some nice berries for desert.

Got home worried about the Ice I had dumped in my unsealed Willys cooler I made and it turned out not enough Ice even melted after 5 hours to get the seams wet! Can't wait to make the ones for the off road travel trailer that will have 2.5 times as much insulation R12.5!!! Those will be sealed.

Interesting I was in a discussion about something else when someone made the comment"Your CJ-2A can go 60mph?"

And I got to thinking about the Dyno run CHUG made, It reached 4300rpm in Overdrive. Granted it wasn't dragging its butt down the road or breaking wind. But with my gears and tires thats

97MPH  (Granted for not more then a few seconds)

So the fastest CHUG has run is 97mph!

no rod through the block no floating valves no blown head gasket no detonated drive train components.

So much for my jeep can't go that fast LOL

I think in real life wind drag would stop you from reaching 97.
Something to do with having the aerodynamics of a very large brick. Wink
Still, not bad!

Personal experience tells me that before you put a rod through the block, you will first stretch those very long skinny rods.
Yeah, when I was much younger I used to shift at about 6K. LOL

My Dad was NOT amused.

WOW been a while since I did anything to write about.

This morning I added 3 degrees to the timing (now at 12 BTDC)
I changed the Vacuum advance from the Port on the Carb to Straight manifold vacuum
Added my Fresh Air intake set up.

I went out on my "Test Track" and made a run the results put a smile on my mugg.

23.6 sec in the 1/4 mile at 55mph air temp was 6 degrees higher then the previous run record which was 24.5sec at 52mph

And keep in mind I am only using direct drive in 1st. As I still haven't got the OD adjusted to stay in Direct without having to hold the shift lever in direct (something a little hard to do while shifting the main shift cane) So I think I can shave a little time by running in Direct or at least being able to shift properly. I can tell its running a little to high of gear over about 45-48 mph.

SO a marked improvement for my changes.

Until you get it sorted out, you can free up one hand by using a rubber bungee cord to hold it in direct.

I have thought about that. But with it being a pita I'm more likely to get it squared away.

Ok today's adventure report we went from Silverton up to North Plains where there is a Turtle pond. We took a very round about route did some winery visiting and some antique shopping where I scored a great piece of Willys history a catalog from United Auto parts in Kansas city MO. Of JEEP Ford and Willys  1/4 ton parts March 1950. For a whopping $3.00.

Sadly no Turtles chose to appear for our cameras it was to hot i believe.

And the best part was we did the whole 169 miles on less then a tank of fuel!!! OMG I just put CHUG away and stuck the tank there is very close to a full gallon left in the tank a good 5/8" on the stick even accounting for the sticks angle!!

So at the very least we got 17+ mpg and this trip had a bunch of hills and LOTS of starts and stops as well a good amount of 55mph stuff at least 3/4 of the distance.

I will know for sure tomorrow when I fill the tank. I am filling it to an exact mark on the fill neck that brings the fuel level to the top of the tank exactly.

Really pumped about this improvement. This has to be due to the additional timing and the Fresh Air Intake being put back on after being off all this time.

OK I wanted to list all the spec's from yesterday

Mileage 17+ mpg
average speed 50mph with a lot of 55-60mph
engine temp sat at 180-185° the whole day Air temp was high 80's
Tranny oil temp ran up to 180° towards the later afternoon ran about 160° during the cooler morning

I noticed a marked improvement on hills with the replacement of the fresh air intake. I also notice I am running about 2in hg higher at a given load most likely due to better timing.

Well I ran into one of those crazy easy jobs that ended up taking almost 3 hours I put a pair of cup holders in Chug

I already had the tapered piece of Micarta that made the mount created. The Cup holders (from eBay) came today the Neat Blue Kozzies the other day. The stickers Audrey got me a while back.

I used Blind Rivet Nuts into the bottom of the Defroster to anchor it. Well first I drilled the holes the wrong size then I couldn't get the screws to go into the nuts turns out I had 10-32 screws and 10-24 nuts. OK so down to the hardware store for the right screws. I had meesed up the center of the three nuts trying to force the wrong screw into it. So I had to drill it out. And when I went to put a new nut in the Frecking install tool BROKE. So it has two screws holding it instead of three.

Other then that and a WHOLE LOT of cussing I am happy with the way it came out. It will hold anything from my GMRS walkies to my large insulated coffee tumblers.. And with the Kozzies pop cans and such.

Car show in the morning at the Mt Angel Octoberfest just 4.5 miles from home. Going to head up there about 6:30am and get me a good spot. Parking at the Grade school.

Should be about 75,000 people tomorrow with the good weather.

SO a while back I showed photos of the little Lunch/Drink cooler I made for CHUG to sit behind the console. I used PINK foam board R5 rated and thin aluminum construction.

Yesterday morning at 6:30 am I filled it using two 1" x 6" x 7" self contained Ice packs (not blue Ice) 4) 8oz cans of Diet Coke a 16oz bottle of water and a 12oz cold coffee in a glass bottle.

This morning at 10:30 I unpacked it to get the last Diet Coke and the Water bottle out. The Diet Coke was very cold to the touch the water bottle was similar.

SO I am pretty happy that MY little cooler will keep stuff about refrigerator cold for at least 28 hours I am sure if I had put more in it and another of my small blue ice packs it would go over 30 hours. Makes a great addition for the adventures and the car shows.

SO an adventure up date This last Sunday we made our longest 1 day trip so far

310 miles of which 80 was on forest service or National Forest roads including some signed that they were not maintained for Public travel (LOTS OF POT HOLES AND WASHBOARD) it took approx. 21.3 gallons for an average MPG of 14.5 This trip had the most 1st and 2nd gear travel as well as gain in elevation of any of our trips. And the run home was pretty much all at 55-60mph due to the huge amount of traffic coming home on the opening weekend of general deer season. So pretty happy about that.

We did a little true off roading traveling down goat trail on the East side of Cougar Reservoir the wife wasn't to happy having to back up 100 yards on the slopped side of the Reservoir to find a turn around when the trail ended up blocked by a large rock.

We left the house about 6:30 am I had the wife as bundled up as I could but by the time we got to Detroit Oregon (virtually destroyed by the Beachie Creek Fire in 2020 and being rebuilt) She needed a warming up and some coffee.

The run down from Santiam Junction to Tombstone pass Summit where we caught National Forest Road 15 for the turn south to Hwy 126 was much warmer as its on the East side of the mountain and the road is not so buried in trees so shaded. And the run down NF 15 was real nice almost no traffic what so ever we passed maybe 2 pickups in the 25 miles on the road until we got close to a recreation area by  Blue River Reservoir.

Then once we hit Hwy 126 a short 3 mile blast into the "town" of McKenzie Bridge to fill the tank Not fun at $5.49 a gallon for regular. It took 9.6 gallons. Then back west to the road we paved about a month ago that runs up the West side of Cougar reservoir.

This is CHUG sitting on top of the dam.

Upon leaving the Reservoir area we took NF 1993 which was supposed to run us right back to Mckenzie Bridge but once we got on the East side of the ridge (which offered stunning views of the West Side of Three Sisters Wilderness area and Mt Bachelor) the road was closed due to a Bridge being out so we were detoured on to a Road 2638 that made it was down the ridge to Horse Creek offering some great views of the fast moving creek. Audrey was taking videos all through the trip and is going to put a video up on You tube in a day or two.

This road 2638 actually took us back to Hwy 126 just about a mile East of where the 1993 road would have. Once back on the Hwy it was time to haul ass and try to get home before dark.

As it would happen about 18 miles from home CHUG decided to run out of gas. So a quick emptying of the Jeep Can and away we went (take that you EV's)

It was a long 12.5 hours and I am pretty sure our last day long adventure until the Hard top is finished. Its just to cold for Audrey to ask her to do that again. Incentive to get the hard top done.

A couple of the photos I took from the driver seat of CHUG

Next up will be my report on the HOMECOMING PARADE adventure LOL

SO that time of year I enjoy the most is rapidly coming upon me. When work runs out of thing for me to do and I can work on CHUG and my other projects in piece.

With this in mind I have been thinking a lot on how I will get back to work on the Hard top. I still have the front roof section to frame up and more to do on the doors (mostly the lower half) But I will soon be tackling the skinning of the top.

The skin will be .040" aluminum and with only a couple exceptions will be Epoxied onto the frame work and the 1/8" Thick underlayer. I have been thinking up ways to "stretch" the skin over the frame work to leave a nice smooth surface. I have this pretty much figured out.

Its the epoxy I am stuck on. While 3M makes a panel adhesive that at first look would be ideal for this it being used in the autobody world. It has a short working time and is dispensed via a chalking gun type rig that would be hard to get glue on all the frame structures and then get the skin and frame locked into the stretching frame I am hoping to use. On the other hand there is good old JB Weld with almost a 45 min working time at 70° (most likely my shop will be not more then 50°-55° when I do this so maybe a bit longer). I can mix up a big batch of it in just a min or two and using a brush or use a Pastry pipping bag to get it on the frame work pretty fast.

A draw back to the JB Weld is the fact that once its setup its almost impossible to get off so if I make a mistake I could be in real trouble.

I can have my son help me with the gluing and assembly he has lots of experience with building models from lots of different materials and using many different adhesives. So that will help.

Can anyone think of any other kind of epoxy or adhesive that might be better then JB Weld?
