I have been curious since I started driving my 47, what is my top speed? My speedometer is definitely off,I just wasn't sure how much.
So today I took advantage of the beautiful weather and downloaded a gps speed app to my phone, then went out driving.
I topped out at 52 mph. That was on a nice paved road, but not a highway.
I think if I pushed it, I could get 55.
I Don't usually ever go above 40 though. That's a comfortable speed to cruse for me. Any more and I feel like I'm going to kill the engine!

Sound about right, 45 is all you want to ask of these rigs. My speedo is right on as far as gps goes. With an OD you can run 45-50 nicely.

My '46 CJ2A with an F-Head gets me 48 mph and it is screaming in protest.  I like about 40 or so as a max...

Stock standard with 29" tall tires at maximum crankshaft velocity of 4000 RPM = 60 MPH.

The maximum efficient RPM for a G0-Devil is the same as the maximum torque output @ 2100 RPM.
With standard 29" tall tires the pre 1963 CJ's will optimally cruise at 35 MPH.

Not nearly as efficient but I will recommend an absolute maximum sustained RPM of 3100.
The maximum sustained speed then becomes 50 MPH.
Beyond that the MPG and the engine longevity suffers horribly.

Add a 25% O.D. and the ideal cruise speed increases to 47 MPH with a maximum sustained speed of 66 MPH.

Sufficient HP to tackle hills and head winds at hiway speed is a separate concern.

Mine will get to 50 fairly well, 55 is a strain, and if I hit a long flat or slightly downhill, 60. Going over 50 raises the engine temp from 185 to 210.

Rob,
Don't forget the "highly efficient" brakes, be kind to the drivetrain and yourself with the speed!

I am sitting on the fence at the moment deciding to try and find an Overdrive or fit the PTO set up I have.

I have 600-16s on Jeep and as long as it will sit on 40mph I will be happy enough.

I guess the compromise is to go to 6.50s or even 7.00s  to gear it up a bit?, I think both were options when the Jeep was new and I like the look of NDTs.

The brakes aren't bad if restored and adjusted correctly.

Mine is happiest at being around 43 at top speed. I would love an overdrive but not to go faster, just to keep the RPM's down and have 6 forward gears.

My max is probably 45. I feel I'm abusing it pushing it into the 50‘s. I have an overdrive and have really enjoyed the splitting of gears and helping out in lowering the top end RPMs. I use it for nothing related in trying to go faster.

How?, I thought once the PTO bolted to the back of the gearbox I lost the spot for the OD?

Oh No....more $$$$$$, better get it going first, just doing the rear wheel bearings now, about to measure up the shims, ..I'd like to get it sitting back on its wheels before the holidays here are over, then once the new gearbox mainshaft arrives, yippee....the engine, gearbox and TC can all go back in.
