Last night i tried the starter out to see if my temporary wiring was ok. Half of the time I hit the starter it sounded like the little gear wasnt spun out all the way on the flywheel. It would grind. Bump it again and it would go all the way and crank over. I remember having this problem when we got the jeep but I had forgotten about it. Could the bendix be bad, or maybe gunked up enough in there that its not spinning it out fast enough? It is the correct starter with the 10 tooth bendix gear on it. It is a little rough. All of the replacements I have seen for these are a 9 tooth which I thought was for the 124 tooth flywheel gear. My motor is original and Im almost positive I counted it a while back and it was the correct 97 tooth flywheel gear. Does anyone have a line on an NOS 10 tooth gear?

It does sound like the starter bendix is going out. OR the bolts are a little loose, check that first.

You could try a little light oil on the shaft. Something like 3in1 oil. Work the gear up and down to make sure it moves freely. How do the teeth look on the gear? Tim |

Bolts are not loose, I just put the starter back on Sunday.
The teeth are a little buggered up on the ends. Its probably time to replace the bendix. Can I do that myself, or do I need to send it off? I need to look around and make sure I get a 10 tooth gear. |

Ryan,
I've replaced the Bendix on a MZ4113 starter a few times. It's pretty easy. The hardest part...if you pull the shaft completely out of the housing, it's a real bugger trying to get all four brushes back on top of the communicator portion of the shaft. The springs on the back of the brushes fight you all the way. I was worried that I might break them if I pulled them too far out of the way, but they are pretty tough. You can replace the Bendix without fully removing the shaft from the housing, but it's a little more tricky to get a wrench on the screw you need to remove. Ultimately, while you're fighting that fight, the shaft might slip out anyway. Tim Edit: I've picked up my replacements from Walcks. Edited by athawk11 - 04 Mar. 2015 at 4:24pm |

I got it running last night! First time since I bought it in 2013. Here is a video where you can year the starter doing its thing.

I just did 3 starters. If you use a pick, you can set the springs for the brushes off to the side, and pull brushes back. Then you can slid the shaft in or out.

From what I could see, clutch not turning with starter on, yes, Bendix shot. And fuel supply should be slightly higher than pump for proper operation.

I finally got my bendix in today. Can I spray brake cleaner on the insides of the starter to clean it out. It's kind of grimy.

Use Electric components cleaner. I hosed out my starter with several cans of that stuff and it was much happier.
