What tire diameter (in inches) is the stock speedometer gear based on?

It's a 46 CJ2A with a full float Dana 23 in the rear, and 25 in the front.

Right now I have P205/75R15's which are a little over 27" but I've not been able to verify the accuracy of the speedometer yet.  The tires aren't in the best shape, so I'd like to put on something that will give me an accurate reading.

I found this on Willys Tech:

"Stock tires were 16x7.00 or 16x7.50 bias ply (may have even been as narrow as 16x6.50 on some vehicles)."

If you want to make a fun experiment out of it, try running down the road with GPS and a working speedo to compare. If they read different, try changing the tire size and run at it again.

I have 15" rims now with 205/75R15's which are a bit over 27"

Maybe they aren't original rims?

Original tires on a 46 would be 6,00 X 16 which are around 29 1/2" dia. Willys started using larger tires on the M38 military jeep.

Thanks Jim,

Apparently 15's were an 'option' - they're the slotted type rims.  I'm also too young (I don't get that much anymore) to remember anything but metric or rarer SAE diameter measures for tires.  I'd never seen them written the way you guys did.  Definitely learned something today!

You could get any size you wanted on a CJ2A in 1946 as long as it was a  6.00 - 16  like the model T Ford you could get any color you wanted on it as long as it was black  LOL. I haven't heard of any 15" factory or dealer option wheels for those years.  Not saying that the owner didn't put 15s on i though.

I saw it listed over at www.cj-2a.com in the part search.  But yeah there's no way to tell what was swapped over the years.

I think that the stock tires were about 28" tall. It can be a bit confusing going between the various tire size designations that have changed over the years.

Tire companies have specification tables that list width, diameter when mounted, load ratings, recommended rim width, etc. These are really helpful when trying to compare metric sizes and older bias-ply sizes.

I would guess that 235/75 /15 would be closest in size to a stock 16 on a 2a they run 29-29.5 usually. Sometimes depending on wheel off set they will rub on the frame a centered wheel or one that is off set to the outside (we called the deep) wheels will work okay.

235mm is around 9.25" so it'd be a little wider.  205 is closer to 8" - but whether you can find the profile height/rim size is another story.  I haven't had a chance to check with a GPS yet

Brian,
Can you post a photo of your wheels?

As was mentioned above, 15" wheels were an option, but there are many 15" wheel styles that have ended up on a Willys. Changes to the later styles were generally done to take advantage of the safety bead feature. This allowed the owner to eliminate the use of tubes, and take advantage of a more modern style tire.

This photo shows a Kelsey Hayes 15" x 4.5" wheel that you would find on the Willys optional list. These are 15 x 7.0 tires. They stand 29.5" tall...

That is the wheel style I recently went away from.  You can see a similar wheel in an older photo here on my spare.

It is a later wheel.  Perhaps found on a '60s Jeep Commando.  It is a 15" x 6" wheel and can support a large variety of tires...tubed or tubless.  I had a set of 225-75/R15 on these wheels, but that was some time ago.  I can't tell you what the diameter was.  I also can't say if the Speedo was accurate.Ouch
