Localish sale of 5) 16" wheels seller knows very little. Can anyone tell me if this wheel will run a tubeless tire? He says they are 2A or 3A wheels.

It is not a deep drop rim, and probably not airtight. If you use a tubeless tire, put a tube in it. Just an opinion.

Mark - are these wheels 4.5" X 16"? If so, they will not be reliable with tubeless tires. Might work, might not.
I have a set of 6" X 16" Jeep wheel from a wagoneer/truck that I think will work with tubeless tires. If they don't, I will just add tubes. M

Those wheels have no safety hump, so a tube is recommended.

I'm strongly trying to avoid tubes as they have a negative effect on mileage (adding rotating weight to the tire) and Cost to the project.
Now some of you are going to comment that a Willys Jeep isn't something to worry about mileage with. Well for most of you I can see that. I plan on driving mine to work most of the summer as well as doing some long trips and such in the winter when I have time off. So every aspect of its performance is a concern. That said Unless a set of Gladiator wheels appears on the horizon in the next 6 months I think I will end up going with the 15" wheels I was originally planning as well as P235/75-15R tires as the cost and choice in that size is hard to beat. I'm sure the 30% OD will make up for the loss of an inch in tire size compared to what I could have gotten in a 16" wheel. Thank you guys for your help on this.

Todays tubes are half the weight of the old ones, and not very expensive.
You won't see the difference in Mileage. The tube is inside the ply line. I've run a few 67" SAE rolling resistance lab tests... |

I'm surprised at your reluctance to add a few pounds worth of tire tubes to your Willys. Looking back at your project, adding weight does not appear to be your primary concern.
My thoughts on wheels and tires...Run what you like, but add tubes to vintages wheels that don't have the bead lock/ridge. Many M38 wheels have the vintage look, and have the added safety of the bead ridge. |

The rims for the CJ2 and CJ3 are not air tight. There is a safety rim that has the lock ridge but they too are for tubes.
Thinking no tubes will increase gas mileage is chasing a ghost. If you want to use tubeless tires you can use late 50-s Ford 15" rims that have the same bolt pattern as the CJ rims. Radial tires will have better rolling resistance but your still chasing a gas mileage ghost. I seriously doubt you will get better than 18 mpg no mater what you do. |
