More hat channel progress today.
I bought a new drill bit today and got the blocks finished and installed in the hat channel. Then I bolted the hat channel to the tub.
Hopefully I get it welded up tomorrow.

To do it properly the body needs to come off the frame.
The hat channel is welded to the body and sandwiched between the frame and the tub. I would think that if your hat channels need replacing that your floor is probably pretty rusty too.

What are those blocks made of?

The blocks are steel.
I primed them with a new copper based weld through primer i am trying out. I then painted the undersides of them to seal them before I tacked them in.

92889 -- I'm curious about your decision to use steel plate for the hat-channel mounting blocks, rather than steel tubing. Any particular reason?

Lindsay,
I was not going to put wood back in to the channel as I think that probably led to a lot of the original corrosion problems. I wanted something solid in there where the bolts go through so when they get tightened down attaching the tub to the frame the hat channel won’t get crushed. The block under the drivers seat gas tank needed to be threaded so I could attach the tub to the frame from below without a bolt head or nut ending up under the gas tank. It’s not a question of weight as there are 6, 2” blocks total. A small solid block of steel at each attachment point seemed like the best way to me.

I got the idea from Andy (Shadow). He’s a local guy that I met on this forum who has been giving me a lot of advice and help. His build is here ...

If you click the link and scroll down a bit you will see how he did it exactly the same way.

Hope that helps. I am by no means the authority on this.

Jon

Jon, thanks and no criticism of your solution implied! Yours is definitely a viable approach. I mentioned the steel-tubing solution because a few of the companies selling jeep hat channel replacements are using short pieces of tubing welded into the channels to serve as spacers/crush mitigators, substituting for the original wood. I've been following your resto and your work is top notch!

I felt no criticism by your question.
I hope the answer helped.
Honestly I have no idea what I am doing and I learn as I go. If anyone sees a better way to do something, please let me know.

Appreciated,

Jon

I got the hat channel welded on today. Not perfect but it’s pretty good enough. I got plenty of practice in today with spot welding. I only felt the need to drill and redo one spot.  All 4 body mount holes line up perfectly with what we laid out on the tub. The inside is primed and painted. Hopefully it’s good for the next 72 years.

I think I’ll tackle the tool box repair and install next then keep
moving aft.

Your fab's looking fab! Did you use anything special for primer inside the hat channels? And any thoughts on seam-sealing the channel-to-floor interface? I'll be tackling my hat channels soon and so interested in this.

LR47

Nothing special with the paint. Just self etching primer and an enamel rattle can for paint. I don’t see any point of seam sealing the hat channel to the tub. The ends of my hat channel are open and if you go through deep water or mud I think moisture will get in there. I’m trying not to overthink it. Again I am not an authority on this stuff. Just muddling along.

Hi, where did you source the hat channel pieces to make the repairs to the originals?

M,

I took an old piece of hat channel in to a local metal fabrication shop and they bent up a 48” piece for me in about 10
minutes.

I paid cash, it wasn’t expensive, everyone was happy.

Ken came by today to teach me about hammering and heat shrinking metal. We spent about 4 hours flattening out the rear bed. I think it came out pretty good. I will now use what I learned to beat the top of the wheel wells flat.

You can see a pretty good bulge here from years of abuse..

Much flatter..

Looks pretty good from the top side too.
