I got a heavy block placed under the wheel wells and had a go at hammering them back in to shape. It came out pretty good. Again not perfect but not too bad either.
This is the same method we used on the bed. |

That looks great. Besides hammering, what was your technique with using heat?

It’s kind of hard for me to describe as my friend is the expert and showed the technique to me. Basically you heat up the area (in our case about a 2” circle) with any oxyacetylene torch till it glows orange. Then you take the heat off and push up from below with the dolly quite forcefully. Then start hammering. Ken hammered in a circle pattern around the orange area working his way to the center then tapped the center down flat. Then you quickly quench the area with a wet rag. It was really amazing to see and participate in. I ran the torch and wet rag. Ken did the hammer and dolly work.
There is a pretty good description on Trev’s Blog that you can find here. Hope that helps you. Edited by 92889 - 03 Nov. 2019 at 3:58am |

You can see the spots we heat shrunk in this photo.
The cross brace below the bed in this location has been removed. |

Today I had a go at repairing the lower right side of the tailgate opening. I took it off the rotisserie, pulled it together with ratchet straps and clamps and welded it back together. I got called away so didn’t finish but I’ll finish it up soon.
The rear rotisserie mount is too wide and it is spreading the top of the tailgate opening so I’ll have to modify it. When I fabricated it I just made it to fit with no regard for how wide it should actually be. Since I got called away 1/2 way through the job the rear of the tub is dangling from the ceiling but it’s secure. |

Jon, I'm curious about the bare-metal disc connected to the black cord that's attached to the right side of your tub -- is that a ground for your MIG welder?

Lindsay,
It’s a ground for the MIG welder. The disc is a magnet instead of a clamp and the spring loaded connection is in the center. I like it better than the jaw clamps. You can pick them up anywhere and it’s easy to install. |

Never seen one of these; I still use the traditional ground clamp. I will seek one out at my local welding supply shop and give it a try. Thanks.

I got around to cleaning up my welds on the tailgate corners.
After that was done I had to modify my rear rotisserie mount bracket. I built it to the size of the tailgate opening not realizing that the top of the tailgate opening was 1/2” wider than the bottom. It’s all good now though.

I got some work done on the toolbox. I replaced the rotted inner channel bracing. It’s not original but plenty strong and no one will know it’s not stock tucked up in the toolbox.

Today I replaced the rear cross brace under the bed.
Lots of measuring and double checking to get the bolt holes in the correct spot. I have some more channel material so I may add a few more cross members to really beef it up under there. Edited by 92889 - 15 Nov. 2019 at 4:58am |

I got the toolbox finished last night. The final thing to do was to swap lid pull rings for the good one. I got it all primed. I’m pretty happy with the result. Back to repairing the tub.

I removed the 4 rotten rear body mounts. There were a lot of spot welds and they were really stubborn to remove. The first one I went at from the outside but that’s a bad idea because it just leave a bunch of holes in the body. Not really a big deal because they will get filled in when I spot weld the new brackets in. The other 3 I removed from the inside which gave a much better result.

I also patched and cleaned up the lower right rear corner. Someone had drilled holes to mount a tail light but they did an awful job of it. Also that’s the area where I cut out the first body mount from the outside so more holes.
I will be using 2 tail lights so I can have signals. So I drilled for that to match the existing hole on the left and to accommodate for the bolt pattern on the light buckets that Andy picked up for me. Edited by 92889 - 20 Nov. 2019 at 1:53am |
