We got the cracks in the block repaired today using the lock and stitch method. It went really well. Happy with the results.

Now that the cracks in the block are fixed it’s back at the machine shop for reconditioning prior to my rebuild attempt.
Fingers crossed.

In the mean time we moved the transmission cross member aft 1 3/16”. The jeep salad is getting a T90 transmission on its GPW frame.

“Bubba-fied!” You say. Maybe/maybe not.
I am trying to build the best jeep I can with the parts I have so this is the direction I have taken. And I’m ok with that.

I'd say that doesn't count as a "Bubba" job.  Weld it on--badly--with a couple dozen rods and bolt it with wrong-sized, rusty, non-graded bolts and then you're talkin' Bubba!  Big smile

Our crack repair on the block passed the pressure test at the machine shop. The ‘42 head I was going to use that was crack repaired by a previous owner failed the pressure test, so that was a set back. Fortunately Andy Fortier donated a spare head that he had. It’s a bit rusty so I’ll get it cleaned up and drop it at the machine shop soon.

I’ve got PT blaster soaking in the spark plug holes. I’ll try to ease them out soon. This is the ‘correct’ style head for my engine so that’s an added bonus.

Just keep at it My Jeep sat for 10 years after my mother did her suicide bit. One afternoon I decided to pull it into the yard and by the evening it ran.

Yup... I just keep plugging along one day at a time.
It’s hard to find the time with work and family. There definitely needs to be a balance. But I enjoy picking away at it.

I also appreciate the help of my friends especially Ken Voth and Andy Fortier. And all the online help I have received. This really is a jeep ‘community’.

I built an electrolysis tank to clean up the rust on the head that Andy donated to my cause.

It worked really well.

From this...

Soaking in the E tank for 23 hours....

To this.... all rust gone. Gave it a wash in the parts washer after the E tank treatment then a gentle touch on the soft wire wheel.

Those spark plugs were a bugger to get out though !!!

Congrats on fixing the block, One thing about I don't understand about the Lock & stich method is what prevents a leak in the space between the plugs? or is one plug threaded into the next? It looks like a repair method welders would use to repair cracks in large castings with soft(low carbon steel) plugs used then welded. Anyhow great work thanks for the pics Joe W

92889 - How long did you run the head the electrolysis tank?  I am assuming you used a 12 volt battery charger set on maintain not on 10 or 30 Amp recharge.  -- It that correct?  It also look line you ground in on the center support holding the head and you spit the positive to the outside plates - is that correct.

Thanks,
Stev

Joe,

Here is the method I used.
We laid a row down then went back and overlaid a second row interlocking with the first set installed. There is also a thread locker sealant applied.

Just google lock-n-stitch. They have excellent support.

Steve,

I am by no means the authority on electrolysis. I googled it, watched about 5 different videos and gave it a try.

I ran it for 23 hours, 12V, 2A and yes the ground goes to the part that you want the rust removed from and the positive lead to the anodes around the perimeter of the tank.
