I got a bit sidetracked and took the toolbox apart today.
I am taking the hat channels to the sandblaster tomorrow so I figured I’ll do the toolbox at the same time. That was a pain to get the rotten braces off. |

I am having one more piece of metal bent up to fix the hat channel properly. In the meantime I was able to get in to the shop and do some sandblasting with my home unit.
One step at a time. Some days are 12 hours on the project and others like today are 45 minutes. |

I had a good look at the toolbox in the donor tub and it appears to be in better shape then the one I already took apart so I liberated it. It was a bit of work but it came out more easily than the first as it was not spot welded in like the other. Rather it had stitch welds along the edges. I wonder why they were installed differently? Lack of quality control maybe or a change of procedure. Who knows? I am now taking the rotten bracing out then I will get it media blasted. I also removed the fuel filler cowl from the donor and primed the bits that I got sand blasted yesterday.
I really enjoy having a sandblasting cabinet at home. |

I took the second toolbox to U-Blast today to get it cleaned up. While sandblasting I noticed a lot of layers of paint. I thought the original colour was picket grey but what I found on the tool box at least was...
Luzon Red Red Olive Drab Yellow Red (again) Brown Black It reminded me of reading the rings on a tree. This jeep definitely has a lot of history to it. |

It got pushed to the back burner but we made good progress on the hat channel repair today.
After we got the webbing repaired we spent a good 2 hours with the hat channel sitting on the frame measuring and checking. Then transferring those numbers to the bottom of the tub. Then checking, cross checking and checking again. Those high school geometry lessons came in handy today!! Hopefully it’s time well spent and the tub will sit true on the frame when the time comes. Thanks for the kind words.
I bought a new toy today. 60 gallon air compressor. 240V 14amp 11.3CFM at 90 psi 13.2 CFM at 50 psi It should work well for all the sandblasting, painting and air tool use I have been trying to do with my smaller compressor. I bought it second hand but I think it’s new, never been used. I had to wire in a power line and it needs a regulator but I’m getting close to giving it a try. |

That sure looks new. It was never bolted to a floor, at least.

I spent the afternoon today reconfiguring the shop to accommodate the new compressor. Then I gave the sandblaster a try. It worked noticeably better and the compressor only kicked in a couple times. I’m looking forward to trying painting with the new air supply.

One more vintage fire extinguisher (blue label) for the collection.
I only post it here because the collection started when I went looking for a period correct fire extinguisher for my Jeep. I’ll be back to work soon. |

I spent the morning making some blocks to go in the hat channel where the body mount bolts pass through. I think I’ll pass on the original oak fillers.
This one is threaded to accept a bolt from below. As you can’t have a bolt head sticking up on the drivers side below the fuel tank. Edited by 92889 - 23 Oct. 2019 at 12:17am |
