Keep in mind that the way he did it requires reach up under the Jeep to install or pull the hitch pin. It's great for keeping the hitch unobtrusive (both for appearance and for rock clearance), but it's less easy to use. So make your own trade-off decision.

No offence guys but can you PM each other if you want to discuss amongst yourselves. I don’t mind answering questions about my build here but I’d prefer to keep it more of a blog than a Facebook page with everyone weighing in and debating.
Appreciated Again no offence intended. Thanks Jon

I welded up some small cracks and hammered out some dents in the drivers front fender. Can’t quite get it to bolt up. Body needs to move about 1/4 - 3/8” aft, I think only on the left side. I’ll play with it tomorrow. The right fender needs more work than the left. |

I got the front left fender installed. The tub position is fine. The trick is to loosely bolt the fender to the frame first then attach it to the tub.
I’ve started rebuilding the passenger side front fender. The part that bumps out around the battery is really corroded and thin so I am replacing it. Also welded up multiple cracks. The brace behind the battery bump out needed some love too. The brace was full of dried mud. My buddy says it looks like Normandy mud but I think it’s either Kansas or Oregon mud. |

I made good progress on the right fender today.
I beat the old battery bump out section flat to make a template. Then I cut out a new one. All I had in the shop was thicker 18 gauge sheet metal. So that part of the fender will now outlast the rest of the jeep. I used my welding table as an anvil to beat the metal in to shape. I would love to have a proper brake to bend metal with. Still have a bit more work to do on it to make it right but I feel like I got a lot accomplished today. |

I snuck into the shop for an hour today with my brother.
We were able to finish the metalwork on the right fender by adding on a missing bolt hole tab. Grill next then hood and windshield frame. |

Thanks for the compliment.
I have 3 grills. 2 CJ2A and one GPW. I really want to use the military one because I prefer the look of it. Problem is that it’s a bit bent up so we’ll need to see if we can do some hammering on it to straighten it out. In the meantime I bolted on my best grill and attached the better of my 2 hoods. The gap from the hood to the fender is bigger on the passenger side than the drivers side so I’m going to have to give that some consideration. Anyhow, it’s actually starting to look like something. Andy, I think you should spend a day here sharing your wisdom for the fine tuning to get everything to fit properly!!!
Ken came over today and we spent about 4 hours hammering on my bent up military grill. It’s not perfect but it’s 98% there as far as I’m concerned. I won’t go in to all the details but we got pretty creative to get the grill straight, flat and reshape all the holes. I wish I had a before picture... Windshield rehab is next. It’s on the operating table now. |

I took this picture when I was up early watering the lawn. I just really like it. The Jeep is starting to look like something.

I’m very impressed with the metal work you’ve completed on this jeep. That fender patch panel was top grade work

Jon, the project has been interesting for your fellow 2A owners to follow. I've learned from your photos and descriptions. And it shows how you don't need a huge shop to restore a Willys jeep. Now, put that MB grill on her!

LR47, there you go....
I’ve got a little bit more work to do on the grill but I think it looks great. |

I thought between the 2 inner windshields I have I could cobble together 1 good frame. The brown one is pretty rotten. I got the yellow one taken apart. BAD NEWS, there is not enough good metal between the 2 to build one. GOOD NEWS, I can reuse the top bar of the yellow one. Which is great because it has the hinge attachment. I’ll try to fabricate the rest of the frame myself “jpet” style. |
