I am in the process of restoring a 1948 CJ2A and have reached the point of installing a new wiring harness. Does anyone know of a place I can go to see tricks, tips, details, or other help with this process?
Thanks everyone! Very useful information. Now, how can I determine the points where the wiring harness is secured to the frame/body, how many fasteners are required, and what size fasteners to use? Edited by DG_48CJ - 07 Feb. 2016 at 7:23pm |

I found it easier using masking tape and made labels identifying the end of each wire before starting to install the harness, and leaving the speed ohmmeter out and work through that hole to connect the wires under the dash. I used a Walcks' harness and it was pretty easy. The only trouble I had was I used the wrong end of the wire on the amp meter and that made it to short for the other end to reach the regulator but that was my bad. Jim

I have a spare dash and cowl section so I am going to flip it upside down and figure out all my connections and lenghts using it so that when I go to put it in I won't have to do as much standing on my head.
I'm also going to have my Tub on a rotisary and I'll put in the under dash wiring while I can have the tub upside down making it easier to sit on a stool and work under the dash. |

Hello, are you asking about the harness routing? Below is a decent diagram if you having difficulty locating the wires.

Lay it out and identify the color codes and where they go. I'm not fond of lying upside down with my head stuck between the gas pedal and steering column, so I first remove the speedometer. You can now get your hand in there. The instruments are the toughest part to hook up. Do one gauge at a time, let the light switch hang down so you can get to it below the dash. Fairly simple. If you attach the wiring opposite on the amp gauge, it will show a charge when you turn on the lights without the motor running. Put grommets in the holes so it won't cut the wiring. When you run the rear trunk to the tail light/lights, make sure the clutch and brakes parts don't rub on the wiring. Usually you go from the dimmer switch under the steering box, and duck into the frame rail ASAP. There are frame clips that hold the harness away from danger. If you are not sure that switches are working, test them with a volt meter set on continuity. You can see things going on that way. Take note that the amp gauge and fuel gauge have a rear mounting bracket that have insulated holes. No shorts that way! This will be a new adventure for you. John

Do yourself a favor when hooking up the wire at the gas tank sender. Test it before you put the sender in the tank, or the seat back over it. I always make a ground wire that attaches to a sender screw and then to a seat mount bolt or hold down bolt behind the tank. The sender uses ground to operate the gauge. No ground, no workie.
