I have a L134 Go Devil with engine block serial number J3159914.  Can anyone tell me what year this engine was built.  The block casting number is 804380.  Any help would be appreciated.

Where is this number you are listing? Is it on the Boss behind the water pump? Or on a plate below the distributor? or is it cast into the side of the block

My serial number is 3J 157012 which the only option I see would be a 1948 (which is what my Jeep is)

Yours if this is stamped behind the water pump would be the same a 1948

Oldbub, does it start with 3J... Or J3?

Mark, 3J 157012 would be much later than 1948. More likely a later 50s L-134 engine made for the DJ-3A.

 comments-
1)  the J3159914 is likely a typo with the real number being 3J159914,

2) I guess the engine in my 1952 CJ3A must not be original because it is 3J122XXX

3) 3J130XXX was the change in 1952 to the block with the wider flange.

So I agree it is a later DJ3A block

Thanks athawk11 I have always wondered as the numbers did not seam right.  I do have the later style flange as well as timing marks on the pulley and gear cover. Later 129 tooth starter as well.

SO Dad (or the previous owner who also put it on a CJ5 Frame )did even more parts collecting on CHUG A LUG then I knew about.

Dad had a 1949 3A prior to CHUG I know some parts (including the windshield came from it) But until I started this build I had no idea how many jeeps were in my project. LOL

This may help clear up some of it .  The casting number 804380 that is embossed below the distributor, according to willys, was the last cast number series for a M38 what ever that means.  According to that it would be a 52.  please comment on this.

There was a typo the serial number starts with 3J instead of J3.

James,  This casting number first appears during the production of the M-38 which is a military Willys that was produced from 1950-1952.  To my knowledge, this is the last casting...or version...of the L-134 engine.  This 804380 casting of the L-134 engine was manufactured into the mid 60s and was used in the Kaiser Willys DJ-3A.

Your serial #3J- 159xxx, is a late 50s, DJ-3A engine.   Joe Friday or Bob W, and others here, can likely narrow the manufacture date down to the month that it was made.

Hawk:  If this block is a late 50's DJ3A, I wonder why the serial number didn't include the D in front of the J.  Just curious.

DJ Engines did not have a DJ prefix on the engine.

Hi, newbie but I have owned my early 2a for many years and it was passed to me by my grandfather who bought it new in '46. Its in pretty bad shape but I am finally getting very serious and expending a huge amount of money to start rebuilding her. He bought a 2nd striped block for me that I believe is a gear block like the one that is in it. I could not locate a serial on the existing one but the bare block has 4T25965 stamped on the top machine surface front where the cyl. head mates up. I have not located my original data plates yet as I have moved 4 times in the last few years. I will be trying to find out more about that to. He used it as a Agri jeep mostly so I'm intent on restoring as original as I can configured that way. Any help with rebuilding a L134 from ground up is appreciated!

"4T"...Its original home was a 4 wheel drive Truck. It is a gear drive.

The serial # for your other engine may have been machined off during a rebuild. If the engine is very early, you might find it on the top edge of block, just in front of the oil fill tube, hidden behind the oil filter canister...if equipped.

I picked up a basket case L134 bare block and what looks like most of the parts to go with it plus some extras. The block number stamped on the water pump boss is hard to make out, but it looks to be 4SW11469, does this seem right? Can anyone tell me what year it is and what it came out of?

That is an unusual serial #. Can you post the casting number? Lower edge of the block on the passenger side.

Hawk

Edit...better yet, how about some photos?
