Vintage Willys @ the Rubicon Trail 2017 - Event Date: 31 July 2017 - 03 Aug. 2017

I'm only taking 5 gallons on the trail with me. I should be good for about 150 miles, give or take.

I spent some time on this today. First, I spent some time welding up the back end a little and repaired my busted up tool boxes, then I emptied all the stuff out of BAM BAM and started organizing. I want everything as weatherproof as possible so I decided to use ammo cans. This is the kitchen:





Lucky for me, I can eat the same chow day after day. This 20MM can has all non refrigerated items. Cans of Ravioli and fruit, Pop Tarts, Cliff bars, oatmeal, trail mix, and of course my coffee gear. All new seals in the ammo cans so they are air tight. BAM BAM's 4.3 does a very good job of heating ravioli.

... earlier this week, I put together a welding kit that uses two car batteries:



.... I have seen these used and it works pretty good. I figure, We can use my battery and the one from whoever breaks down.



Left to right,

Container with U-joints (2), U-joint straps (6), electric fuel pump (1), fan belt(1), spark plugs (6), gasket sealer, rotor (2) ECM (1) ... some other stuff probably.

Container with winch control, snatch block, various winching attachments, also a bag with electrical supplies.

The last container is a canvas bag I made to hold my air pump, air gauge, speed deflators, inner tube patches, tire plugs and tools, valve stems, needles.

At the moment, I'm running tubeless. Still haven't decided yet but I have extra tubes as well so I can fix anyone's flat or my own.



This 40MM can is used to hold some of my bigger tools that won't fit in my Bretto tool roll. Hammers, channel locks, fluke meter, etc. I also have extra tie rod ends in this container, misc bolts, and a universal shackle that will work for BAM BAM or any other jeep with 1-3/4 wide springs. The orange box is my wag bags that I have since moved.



Tool boxes are full of various fluids, brake, power steering, oil, brake cleaner, WD40, etc. I use spare tubes to keep it all from bouncing around

An extra Gerry can of gas and my cooking grill, a gallon of oil, and two gallons of antifreeze



I want to take the gas fire pit so we can have something to sing songs round so I put that on top and the gas tank in front. The small ammo can is for BAM BAM's papers. The jack is under the radio.

Those who have wheeled and camped with me know that I like to use a stretcher to sleep on because it is like a cot but only 4" off the ground so it fits nicely in my pup tent. Since I need something more portable, I got an NAR collapsible litter:





... and here is a small, collapsible chair that I may, or may not use:



.... it's not bad to sit in, but you can't take a nap in it.



I have two ruck sacks. This one has wag bags, toilet paper, bug repellent, water purification tablets, first aid kit, whatever .....

... another ruck sack for my clothes, soap, .... stuff. Canteens for water. My summer top and Bretto tool roll go under the passenger seat. The duffle bag has my tent, sleeping bag, etc.

.... so for water, can we refill at Rubicon springs and use purification tablets? If not, I could haul 5 gallons of water:

... so, anywho, that is a starting point. Still thinking about it. I'm sure I'm missing something but that's why I posted up. I don't have jumper cables. If anyone is bringing any, I won't mess with them.

I also have extra axle shafts, drive shafts, etc that I will bring with me but leave in the truck. I have a full grease gun mounted under the hood.

Not sure what I'm doing about my garbage yet. Probably hang it off the back.

Edit: Also have to tie it all down but I have a pretty good idea on that.

I have jumper cables.  Also I have my Katadyn water filter for backpacking.  There's plenty of water on the trail should we run out.  I'm starting out with my 5 gallon jug and I can filter 500 gallons should we need to.  FWIW, I hate the tablets.  Filter is much better.

I haven't even started thinking about this. I've been a little busy with another little project. I'm afraid many of my spares and tools are scattered along I80 in Wyoming. I'll probably have to rely on my trail partners a little more than I would like. I have a giant cooler that before the crash would just fit between the wheel wells. I was going to use that for a weatherproof container for my camping stuff. I hope it still will fit.

That is one of the reasons I went into detail on my post. I don't think everybody needs to pack everything. I have tire repair, winching, and camp fire covered. I'm light in the cooler department and might want to throw something in someone else's cooler.

Jeff, you were able to get a vintage fire extinguisher operable?  How did you do it?

my camp stove got turned into a frizbie in the wreck and my little teapot fir heating water is also gone. I was p,anning on using mostly dehydrated meals ir other "just add hot water" stuff. Would I be able to mooch some hot water from someone at mealtimes, or should I go and get me another stove and teapot?
