Okay. Catch up time. Had some drama these last few weeks. Laptop crapped out. Lost all pictures. Then me.....trying to navigate on a new machine.....not so good. 

And additionally, two weeks ago today, we lost our beloved Margo. I've lost dogs before. But none have ever hurt like this. So momma and I have had a bit of a rough go. 

But we're getting back on track and I have actually been working here and there and getting things done.

So.....chassis and stuff. 



But of course nothing is easy. the front axle was a mess. The prior builder cut off the perches and welded them back on in the exact worst location you could want. i had 10.5 degrees of caster with the way it was set up. So now I'm at 5 after correcting that train wreck.

and my baby.....guarding my junk. Actually she wasn't much of a guard. You could have walked up and taken whatever you wanted. LOL But she was the sweetest most loving companion you could ask for. Rest well my love. rest well.

Frame looks great blasted and painted!  I've been following your progress.  I was thinking about you Friday- drove to MD near Oakland and hauled back a 71 CJ5 to pull the drive train out of.  I feel your pain on loosing your 4 legger.  They are definitely members of the family.  Looking forward to meeting you at Southington!

Thanks guys. 

Nothing picture worthy to report. But making progress nonetheless. Picked up a boat load of grade 5 and 8 hardware for final assembly. Got the tow bar painted and mounted. Winch and steering box are cinched down for good now. 

Parts are arriving at an alarming rate. Ha! I have either here or on its way:

Dual MC upgrade parts/kit
Rear locker
Thick rear diff cover
Decided to try the Tracker disc brake conversion. All that stuff is on it's way.
Shocks

My goal for this weekend is to get the drivetrain all cleaned up and painted. So maybe at some point we can share some pretty pictures of it all installed for the final time.

Dogs And jeeps just seem to go together.,I had a black Lab, she was the best friend for the entire family.

And here we are today!

The drivetrain is in for hopefully the last time. Now I can start on the exhaust and the brake systems. You may wonder about my color choices. Well after careful consideration I decided to use whatever I had on the shelf. Ha! 

After working on that 49 Chevy, I had a full can of that era Chevy gray left over. Seems like a winner! Then I found 2 cans of Ford blue in a bin. Interestingly I haven't owned a Ford anything since 2000. But hey 2 full cans goes a long way. Winner number two! Then I found a half can of VHT silver high heat paint. Perfect for heat shields. Trifecta! 




I finished off the cross member. I welded all the caps in. But before that, I welded in some nuts. I wanted to be able to support the skid plate. But I hate bolt heads protruding from said skid. I figure by mounting it this way, I can keep the skid perfectly smooth. 



And lastly a bit of nostalgia. We made these shackles years ago for the flexy Jeep you saw pictured earlier. We had this dream of starting a fab shop and calling it Shameless Fabrication. These were our first and only parts. LOL But hey, we had a dream. I've held on to these a long time. One set went on my son's YJ. But these were in a parts bin forever. So it was good to get them back into use!

Knocked out a few more things last weekend. 

Installed a locking device in the rear to match the front locking device. Everything in the rear axle looked to be in fine shape. Pattern checked out ok too. I capped in off by replacing the tin cover with a good heavy cover from Dana. I think we are in good shape here. 



Front end is torn down and inspected in prep for the disc brake conversion. Everything is looking good, with exception of the hubs. Found one with some pretty significant damage. Maybe hit a rock hard. Who knows. So i searched the stash and found a replacement. I think I'm good. But if not I have another Dana 30 I could tear down for parts. Now just waiting on a few last minute parts and I can carry on! 



And lastly - installed the pressure gauge for the air tank. I honestly forgot I ordered this. It was delayed probably 2 months ago and I lost track of it. I was pleasantly surprised when it showed up.

So in today's installment of "too much time on too small a thing" I bring you the license plate mount. 

I ran out of real estate pretty quick on the back of the jeep. I kept thinking on how to solve for it. So this is my solution. 



All well and good - except you can't get the spare off. 

So I created this adjustable mount that is easily removed in the event you need to use the spare. I added three adjustment points so if I ever changed tire size or wheel offset, I could account for it. 





I then ran the wires through the hub flange, then through the hub out the back of the tire mount for a clean look. Because we all love clean looks.....





Fun little distraction that came out better than I thought it would. 

So until the next episode of "too much time on too small a thing" keep it between the ditches! LOL

Well after some parts drama, we finally have the Tracker disc brake conversion done. There was some tweaking the needed to be done here and there to get all the parts to like each other. Took a bit of time, but I'm happy with the result. 



I also did the tie rod flip. I plan to measure and make the drag link tonight. The set up that came with the Jeep was.....well.....just hack. The set up i make for the green Jeep steers and handles so well, I wanted to replicate that here. 



And the exhaust.....

I swapped out the manifolds that came with the Jeep. The front dump driver manifold was causing issues with the power steering pump mount. So I used the late 70's Buick car set. In stock form the driver's bank dumps its exhaust into a cross over tube that connect to the passenger manifold. Then a single exhaust pipe exits the passenger for the combined exhaust. I've used these manifolds in the past and they offer some good clearance and easy set up. 

The crossover tube is where I had a problem. A - you can't seem to find one. B - as it rounds the oil pain to the passenger side, it claims the same space the front drive shaft would like to occupy. 

So I made a custom pipe that wraps around the front of the oil pan then up to the passenger manifold. It was a royal pain in the a$$ as i had to take bits and pieces of stuff I had to get it as high and tight as I could. Worth the effort though. I'm happy with the clearance all around. Next task is to wrap that pipe to reduce heat. 

The rest of the exhaust is mocked into place - 2.25 inch pipe going to a generic turbo type muffler. I still have some work to do with hangers and such. But its largely complete at this point.

Wow, very nice! It will be super cool. Sorry about Margo. I grew up with a Bullmastiff as a kid, and Margo looked very much like him. We have a black lab now and he's the same as Margo. Happy to welcome anyone willing to pet him.

Thanks guys. Losing her has been one of the toughest things we've gone through. But it's gotten much better with some time. We decided not to wait too long, as we need a dog in our lives. So we brought home a pup a couple weeks ago. This time an English Mastiff lady we named Olive. Things are looking up!

Switching gears for a second here. 

Acquired some Lowenuf top bows (many thanks to mbullism for a pleasant and speedy delivery!) I wanted to wait and show off my Jpet summer top fully installed. But i can't help myself! I love the quality and look of this thing that I'm showing it in the mock up stage. It really completes the look of my jeep. 

Many thanks for the fine members here who create great products to keep these old Jeeps alive and looking good!
