I figured so. Just cool old tech! They used to make some handy stuff before the lawyers got involved!

it is cool. like (but significantly different application) the gopher gun previously discussed on this forum. though you can still get a push button solenoid, i doubt you can get the gopher gun. i seem to recall it was Mark W. that had one.

So WOW.....it's been a couple months. I realize I have been terrible at updating as of late. Progress has been slow. But progress has been made! I'm still mostly in collecting/gathering mode.
So I suppose I ought to start here. I bought a 47 2A for parts. It had a lot of the small things I needed, as well as a half cab that I think is salvageable. But.......upon investigation, I now see this 47 appears to be completely original numbers matching. So now what do I do?? Anyway, I did work on the engine compartment. The correct air cleaner is in place. The correct crossover tube is in. Even added the right wing nuts. The mesh has been cleaned and fresh oil is added. I now have the right battery hold down and strap. The 47 mentioned above may be the source for the 6 volt generator. And lastly.....I've been running across 4 states this weekend, picking up the parts I have stored at friends and family's places. Yeah. I'm that guy. But after this weekend's trip, I have 100% left New England. Here is what the MD shop looks likes now! |

Made a little progress today. Hunting for parts has led me to now have two sets of front seats. This black set is in really good condition. They have what appear to be original pans and covers. I can feel springs in there too. Quite happy with these.
But all was not simple. The mounting leg was replaced along the way with some random square tubes welded on each side. Whoever welded the passenger side on blew through the tube and made quite a mess. So I had to cut out the bad section out and recreate the leg. It's not 100% accurate. But it's damn close, as I had a factory example to copy. I'm thrilled to have real seats mounted in the Jeep! Next step is to condition the seats a bit more. Any recommendation on a product to treat and condition the seats? |

Small victories.....
The inner windshield pivots and arms were either damaged or not installed at all. So I took some time today to straighten things out and assemble the arms from the bits and pieces I've found over time. One odd thing - the inner windshield pivots were welded to the inner frame versus riveted. I found no evidence that the frame or the brackets were drilled for said rivets. In addition, the brackets were welded on backwards. So I corrected that and re-welded them. I'm guessing the inner frame is a repop based on the wonky bracket placement, and the new-ish condition of the rubber seal. Anyway - the windshield now pivots as it should! Secondly - I laid out and really examined the rims I recently picked up. I'm convinced that these are original paint and stripe. Now to get that red paint off! I tried a few things - mild solvents, leading up to stronger. I tried some mild abrasives as well. But at this point I feel I'm doing more damage then good. So looking for suggestions to remove the red paint with minimal damage to the original. The black stripe is especially delicate. Or.....do I run as they are (kinda like this idea) or blast, restore, repaint? 6.50x16 STA tires are due to ship in April. Thoughts? |

If the rest of your Willys is weathered, I personally would go with the wheels as they are.

Original paint is huge to the vintage VW crowd. Maybe visit the Samba site for some ideas and products to use in removing the red paint but leaving the original. The pinstriping is probably the most vulnerable.
Oven cleaner can work, but be very careful.

You could try wet sanding with very fine paper. Puts you in control of how much comes off where.

I've had good luck with aircraft paint stripper.....used differently that the label says.
Spray a small area lightly....don't wait for it to bubble wipe off with rag. You'll be able to vary the strength by how long you let it sit and vary stripping ability by use rag, Scotchbrite pad (use a fine one, white if you can get one) Be really careful over the pinstripes....( you will probably remove some of it) This way gives a patina-ed, worn look. DON"T DO IT if you are trying to preserve every little bit. Bottom of this page will show what I was dealing with and using that technique on Southpaw. the paint on yours should come of much easier from the looks of it. Time for a small update....
I've been very busy/distracted with some work on my property. I'm doing some clearing and stump removals that have kept my free time stretched pretty thin. While still largely in collection mode, I acquired a few more things. I now have a proper 6 volt generator and all the mounting. I have a spare 6 volt starter now - although it's missing the dust shield. Once i had none - now I have two horns. I have almost everything I need for a brake rehab. I'm now just waiting for a front frame horn section. Once I get that, the major work of this project can begin - rebuilding the front rails. Anyhow - I decided to rehab the rear seat I picked up. I know it's not the correct early style. But until i can find one, this will do. I stripped the covers and found original springs in fairly good shape. After leveling all the mounting points, I replaced the missing rear leg floor catch doohickey. I decided to send it off to blast. Then I will POR 15 the seat before I cover it. And these arrived finally! I did go 6.50 instead of stock 6.00. Shoot me. I decided to blast the wheels and redo them. Hope to drop everything off at the blast man today! |

small victories!
This Jeep had a pretty significant fuel leak at the pump. Initially i was going to take my usual lazy man's approach to these types of things and just buy a replacement. But instead I decided to rebuild the pump. While doing it, i realized I have NEVER done one. So I learned a little more the other day. A quality kit from Walck's and a little bit of time was all it took. It already had a rebuild tag on it. So I cleaned it up and reinstalled it. Clever little devices! Anyway....fun project for me. At some point I'll correct the lines and the filter. But for now, it'll do! |

Small update -
It's tire and wheel appreciation day! After some horse trading and a trip to the Willys Picnic, I found 5 powder coated rims and one brand new STA for very reasonable money. My original paint rims went to 15277 posted elsewhere here. I got inspired and made my first attempt at mounting tube type tires. Took some tips from here and there and found it to be pretty easy. So at the end of the day, I ended up with 7 mounted STA tires - 5 on powder coated rims and two on "spare" painted rims that will serve as inner mounts. Fun day and fun result - but admittedly way premature. Having the Jeep stop on it's own would probably be a good next step. Front frame repair and suspension rehab on next on the list. all mounted up mounted up....part two |

15277 sends its love for the rims. They are blasted and primed right now. Those rims you picked up look awesome on there.

Life has a funny way of getting in the way of your projects. This past weekend was the first weekend I have been physically home since the 4th of July. So I made sure the slate was clean enough to make some progress.
The frame rails.....oh the frame rails. I took some measurements before surgery began. The bumper was off from horizontal by 1 1/2 inches side to side. From the body mounts forward the bumper was off 3/4 of an inch. So I removed the axle and suspension and squared up and leveled the chassis as best I could and began cutting..... 6-7 hours later - it looked like this. I just realized I didn't take any pictures of it with nothing attached in front of the crossmember. I had to cut 3 inches out of the passenger side crossmember and recreate the radius in order to repair the rust. That took some time to get right - or at least close to right. Still some welding to do yet. And I have to move the original frame tag. I will deviate a bit from stock and do some boxing in preparation for the PTO winch. But I will do it in a way that won't get me fined by the Jeep police. In the end, I got it all within a 1/16 of and inch of square and level. I wrestled a bit to get that 16th out. But realized it's now better than it probably every was. Look ma! No wonky lines!! Next up - winch mount and original axle refresh.
