A big step today!
It was grill appreciation day. I created a lower mount for the grill. I had to notch the radiator support tube in order to capture the mounting hole on the grill. Then we had to notch the grill to clear the PS hoses. The lower section of the grill was pretty thin. So I cut that out and replaced most of the bottom flange with new steal. I also had to reshape the grill a bit. The shroud wasn't allowing for full air flow to the wider radiator. So, I cut the shroud, bent it out to meet the wider space, then reshaped the corners. Then lastly, the radiator mount was tied into the grill. The unit as a whole is very sturdy and was the result I was looking for. Overall pretty happy with the whole thing. I plan to use a felt kit to "seal" the grill to the radiator. I will likely mock the fenders up one last time. Then I can plan the overflow tank, the compressor controls, and maybe a hood prop set up. Once that's all done, I'll move on to fuel cell mounts, seat mounts and steering column. At some point.....I'll paint it.....If i can ever finish the fab work.

Today's lesson - make sure your fenders are mounted BEFORE you create the grill mount. Yep - sure enough, I was way off. Rather than modify the mount, I cut up the grill and bit and changed the position of the hole. I'm not thrilled with it. But it was the best solution.
To make me feel better, I built one more air manifold. I decided to tie the front bumper into the on board air system. All told, there will be two outlets in the rear, and now one up front. And yes - we've seen this before. But this is the final mock up with the new grill and set up. Now I'll build some more of the underhood systems. |

Thanks gents. Appreciate the comments!
Got some big boxes this week! Seats arrived. E-fan, PS cooler and some other tidbits arrived. I'm excited to get the seats positioned. That means I can finally complete the steering. I took the stock wheel and made a quick disconnect hub for it. Not sure if I'll use the stock wheel yet. But it sure would look pretty neat. Need to make a steel run this weekend.....

Busy weekend! I had and extra day to play with this week. We had planned to go away for the weekend. But circumstances kept us home. Soooo......I took advantage of the opportunity.
Some cooling system additions to wrap things up. PS cooler and radiator puke tank are all mounted up. Then.....I figured I needed some airflow over the PS cooler. So I came up with this. Will it really work? I don't know! But it's looks kinda cool and I can't undo it now! Still some finish work to do. But you get the idea. |

Then we started on the seat mounts. After a couple hours of head scratching, I got the basic structure done. I need to add some bracing yet, as well as a center mount. Likewise I need to think about seat belt mounts. Speaking of which, I need to pick out some belts. That should be an 8 hour rabbit hole.....

Seats finally done! This was an epic pain in the a$$. Because it's a glass tub, I wasn't comfortable with just a few mounting points. So I spread the load over 6 points held by 10 bolts. I'll make some plates to further bolster it form below. Just want the dang thing to be safe! Fiberglass does present some challenges.

And then this happened today.....
I stumbled upon this early column shift 46 an hour from home. Fine gentleman who had it allowed me to be the next caretaker. It's largely stock! It does have a truck engine. But the body and frame are numbers matching VEC. There are lots of neat little stock things you don't often find. It has it's origin in the Carolinas. So it's actually in very nice shape. I see areas of pasture green in key places. So the plan? A dear friend has challenged me on several occasions to keep a CJ in a stock pure form. I always scoffed at the idea, mostly due to my impatience and and inability to leave things alone. But I have accepted his challenge and will start with this Jeep. I will only use stock parts. I will only use a repop part when there is no other option. I will only add period correct options. So there is my oath! I will likely start a new thread for this build when the time comes. In the meantime, here is a little preview of the next build! |

So no locking hubs? And please make those hideous turn signal lights on the fenders go away. A Signal Stat 800 turn signal switch can run your single element park lights as turn signals and 4 way flashers.
