Looks well used.  Just by a new one from Ron Fitzpatrick jeep parts.  He does NOT use OMIX sectors.

Cal,
It is not NOS. (New-Old-Stock)

This shaft is worn...but I have seen worse wear.   I would not use this shaft.

Something else for people to check...  I had a different issue with the Omix sector shaft...  Short story:  omix on left after 520'ish miles, factory willys on right with 50,000 miles....

Durangotang, You are still around? I wanted to meet you several years ago when I was down to visit Unclebill.
I think I saw that picture over on the ECJ5 site.

Are these the same shafts for the CJ5 and wagon units? I've got slope in both mine, especially the wagon, and assume I'm going to needing shafts.

I see the term NOS tossed around this site quite a bit. To me NOS means exactly that. New Old Stock. In other words, something that was originally manufactured by Willys or one of its suppliers and was never installed. Ideally, it was on some dealership shelf somewhere and bought up when the dealership closed. Ideally, it has the same packaging that left the factory and has weathered the years in a nice dry place.

To me, there seems to be a lot of "NOS" parts floating around for something that was manufactured 60-70 years ago. Let the buyer beware...

Would be interesting to look a little closer at the failure site; might learn more about how the sector shaft failed  : http://www.maintenancetechnology.com/2012/07/failure-analysis-of-machine-shafts/ and http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S221329021300014X may be informative.  highly variable torsional loading would be expected on this shaft, but the interaction of drive teeth with the worm gear could also cause a bending load.

Local welding could also affect strength locally resulting in a weak spot for the initiation of a fatigue crack

the Ross design with the machined radius at the base of the machined shaft shows good design; radius-ed diameter changes distribute the stress over a wider area.

Ok ordered a sector shaft from Fitzpatrick.  That ALONE was more than most entire box rebuild sets, so, it had BETTER be top quality.  Also ordered the rest of the rebuild set with the gaskets etc.  What is everyone's recommendation for gasket dressing?

Just to clear the air on this, the sector shaft that Walck's sells does NOT come from OMIX.

Also, be sure when you put these Ross boxes together that you fill it with 80/120 oil and not grease. If you steering box had a zerk fitting on it, remove it and replace it with a 1/4" NPT plug.

Although you should inspect what you receive from any vendor, keep in mind that Omix was one of the suppliers, not the manufacturer, and we are talking about parts that were imported 3-4 years ago.
Let the buyer beware.

I believe the correct size is 1/8" NPT...

Is there a practical way of rebuilding the steering box without removing the steering wheel? (I'm not looking forward to trying to pull the wheel - even with a puller_

Not practical. Even a rebuild involving just the replacement of the bearings, bushings, and seal involves maneuvering the worm shaft to replace the bearings which are difficult under the best of circumstances to get into place. The sector bushings would require access from the side towards the engine to remove and replace them. I suppose you could remove the engine to gain access...not too practical...

Have these been narrowed down to a certain production run or anything? Was there a change in suppliers at some point? I've seen some references to boxes rebuilt in the last 3 or 4 years. I rebuilt mine in 2004 or so, probably with parts from Kaiser Willys. Is it still suspect? If there's any doubt I'll pull my cover and look. I've had my bellcrank fall off while driving and really don't want a repeat of that experience.

Glad no one has been hurt with this so far.

I contacted Kaiser Willys on Monday regarding my broken shaft. Sent pictures along with a description of what happened. He offered me a new shaft, at which time I told him I did not want another from the same manufacturer. He offered to send me a Crown Sector Shaft. The shaft arrived yesterday.

KW stood behind what they sold and got parts to me in two days time, I would say that is good service.

Now to find time to change it out. I am going to attempt to install new bushings with the box in place. I am hoping I can pull the new bushings in using threaded rod.
