It's been driving me crazy. I can't stand it any longer. I had to force myself to wait until after the first of the year, I didn't even open up my new Holy Toledo calendar until yesterday. But now I'm going to open the ball, announce the dates, and start the thread.
For those who haven't attended this run before, to start out, check the first post in last year's thread: http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/northern-colorado-mountain-run-2016_topic36782.html?KW=Northern+Colorado+Run That'll give you a pretty good idea of what it's like, just don't confuse the dates. This year, we will run from July 19 thru the 23rd. There'll be lots more info in the coming days on this thread. We've got our eye on a new campsite this year, it's a little farther West and will allow us access to some new trails that were a bit far away before, as well as some of the old favorites. I think it will be a good site with plenty of room for all of us, and easy access for motor-homes and such. It is more primitive than the old site (no latrine ), and it will be even farther from water, groceries, and gas than before, so be sure to bring everything you will need. As in the past, the official start date is Wednesday, but I'll be there before that, and if anyone wants to get an early start, that's fine with me. Questions? I hope so! Ask away! Let's get this thread started, and get ready for the 2017 Northern Colorado Mountain Run! BOOGITY!!BOOGITY!!BOOGITY!! LET'S GO JEEPIN', FOLKS!!!! We Have Miles to Jeep, Before We Sleep BW

We'd love to have you there, Rick, but I know what you're sayin'. If you can't make them all, you've gotta pick the ones you know and like the best, or give one up and try something new. If you can't make this one, we'll see you somewhers else, and be glad of it! BW

Hey Bruce,
We plan to be there by Tuesday. And we'll have some extra stuff along to help others out. We'll bring the portable outhouse. We'll have spare water on board. We're bringing our fuel in a 30 gallon barrel, and I'll have a rotary pump that everyone is welcome to borrow if they bring fuel in a barrel as well. I think the new site should be a great place to camp. It's got a grand view looking out towards Wyoming, and it should have fewer mosquitoes too. It's a long way from a fishing hole though. Oh well, guess we drink beer and talk fishing tales instead. |

Good deal, Mike. It'll be good to have you and Nancy there.
I plan to take at least twice as much gas as I expect to need, maybe more, and Tiny is too. But I don't want anyone to rely on us, if too many do, we may run short. I know that some just don't have room or a good way to haul extra gas, but this gives them time to work on it. For those that may ask, "How much gas?" or "How many miles?", figure six-seven gallons a day, five might be enough, less won't be. It's better to have some left than to run out. Sound about right to you, Mike? I wish I could go up there now and look things over, get miles etc. to the site. I'm afraid that would be 4wd

If your Jeep has it's tank full plus a military can on the back, two more 5's should do it. There are other solutions: Sneak around and siphon at night, ride with a buddy, or just drink more and drive less-----LOL, Oilly

I was worried last year about fuel (and bears ). I took four extra 5 gallon cans and with our trip to the gas station at Red Feather (along with a nice sit down lunch) I think I used two of the 5 gallon cans. Having extra is better than not having enough.
Not really a worrier, BUT I think this year my worry will be the toilet facilities. To quote Bruce: "It is more primitive than the old site (no latrine )," Maybe I'll get me one of these toilets in a suitcase. |

Bruce, I think Oily's got it about right for folks planning on 4 days of jeeping up there. So if they show up with a full tank, and have an additional 5 gallons per day for day 2, 3, 4, ? then they should have enough. That's about what I think I used last year, and in previous years as well. My barrel will give me a bit more than I need, and if someone is short, I'm sure we can make a deal.
Water will be the other need that could be tight for folks. I'm planning on 5 gallons per day for Nancy and myself for drinking coffee or tea, cooking, and kitchen cleaning. I also plan to bring about 100 gallons for showers. I've been thinking about hauling up a 50 gallon water barrel as a backup for kitchen water for us or others, and a source of water for fire dousing at night. I'm hoping some solar panels and the electric cooler will keep the barley-pop cold for the week. Stan, we'll have our portable outhouse up there to provide a comfortable toilet in camp for everyone. It's only a one hole'r, but it's well ventilated and weather tight. We just have to make sure it's downwind from camp!! Edited by m38mike - 09 Jan. 2017 at 10:18pm |

I just got back from the new campsite! Quick trip, wasn't it! I went looking on Google Maps and I'm pretty sure I found it. If anyone wants to take a look at it, and maybe plot a course to it, the middle of the County Road (Rd 80C) at the turn-off is at Latitude 40.935983, Longitude 105.741587. The actual site is at 40.935965, 105.742880. I'm not sure about this decimal business, I'm used to degrees, minutes, seconds, but I guess .9 degrees would be almost one degree, and .74 should be almost 3/4. Anyway, there it is.
We actually won't be far from Eaton Reservoir, and the end near us is on public property. We can drive down to it, and I think we can fish. While looking at the area on Google Maps, I saw several trails that I haven't been on in a good while, some I had forgotten about, and some I wasn't aware of. We will check some of them out. BW Edit: I just got back from another quick trip - I entered those co-ordinates and asked for directions and Google sent me to Mongolia! I forgot something - You have to put "N" at the end of the Latitude, and "W" at the end of the Longitude. I also got it to switch to the "old" system: Lat: 40*56'09.5"N Lon: 105*44'29.7"W BW

Here's the new camp, from a bird's eye view. Bruce, I forgot that Eaton Reservoir was so close. Maybe we do have some fishing nearby!!
The main dirt road going by the camp is 80C, our access road. This image is looking ENE. The blue line near the top is the Wyoming border. I don't know why Wyoming painted it blue, but there it is. It looks like there should be firewood available close by from what I see in the close up image. And we'll have some nice trees for shade and wind deflection in our camp. I can't wait! |

I'm pretty sure I'm going. (OK, OK if you don't mind I'd love to attend!) Probably go a day or two early. One question, though...in the aerial view I don't see the Hotel Casino! I'm assuming it's just out of view
So, after looking at the calendar, I'd like to attend the NCMR. Sounds like a lot of fun....hope you don't mind if I join. Then, since I'm in the area, I'd like to go down to Ouray the following week and check out those trails. The YouTube videos of that area are what led me to this group! Hopefully, some other FlatFenderers will be around Ouray that week that know the area. John Edited by Johnnygeep - 21 Feb. 2017 at 4:32pm |
