Dammit!!! Once again there's a reasonably local forum run and the jeep is down.I could have brought my M1, a scoped Mosin 91/30, and maybe my dad's US Gov't Enfield (Mk 3 No. 4 IIRC). I don't know that anyone would want to shoot my old Sears bolt-action 12ga...

Why not? If it goes "BOOM", I want to shoot it. BW

I am in Carbondale CO. Jeep has developed a rod knock and oil pressure low. Anyone have a set of rod bearings they can bring to camp? Local NAPA may not be able to get them before I leave.

any idea if yours are undersized?
When are you leaving, or are you already on the road? I'm running through my parts suppliers to see if they can overnight something. I'm looking primarily at Crown and Sealed Power parts. Les Update: Walcks has Crown standard size main bearings for $20 each. I know they're closed today, but he's overnighted stuff to me before. You sound like you're en route to the meet to show up early. If I may propose a solution, see if you can grab a caliper on the way. Drop the pan when you get there and mic the rod journal to get the size, then see if Carl can overnight the bearings to someone who will meet you there. The bearings should have the size indicated on the outside of the shell, but it my be helpful to know if you need a different size. Part number for STD size bearing at Walcks is A-7233 Summit Racing also carries it for almost exactly the same price, PN CWA-JA007233

I was a Bradley turret mechanic in the Army, attached to battalion scouts. Aside from being the go-to man when something went wrong, I was like Radar in MASH for scrounging parts and keeping things rolling.
"Field expedient repairs" are my specialty, but I do 'em right*. If I was in Red Willys' position (and had the funds), I'd order all four bearings and grab some back RTV on the way in. I would only replace the bearing that was causing the rod knock and see how oil pressure shaped up after the FER (Field Expedient Repair). If everything looked good, I've have materials on hand for the return trip (oil, catch pan, etc) if I had to replace another on the roadside. Upon returning, I'd inspect the rods and mains. Depending on the condition of the crank and bearings: grooving, pitting, galling, size(as measured w/ plastigage), etc. I'd either dress the journals with crocus cloth and replace with the same size bearings, or have the crank reground. I'd also check out the oil pump and replace/rebuild as needed. All this depending on funds, of course. If funds were scarce, I'd probably just dress the journals and install new same-size bearings. *Many would consider "right" to be a full tear-down and inspection, or a complete rebuild"as long as you're in there." I've never had the funds to go all-out like that, so I try to 'do it right' within the constraints of my budget. Honestly, I couldn't afford to do what I just outlined above. Red Willys, I hope she holds together and you both get through this in good shape. Let me know if you need anything chased down and I'll get right on it. Thanks for your efforts Les. It's looking like I am going to order a set of Standard bearings from NAPA in the morning assuming his supplier has them. I would get the Tuesday. My plan is to slap a standard bearings in to replace the standards that are in there now, make it through the week then repair correctly when I get home.

Well crap. I doubt that I can show up. When we used to go out shooting I always had to bring the M14 .357 .44 Mag, .45 and the 9MM. I sat and watched and when they were done I picked the corners off the targets with my .22 Marlin.

Glen, could you have the bearings shipped to my local NAPA Tuesday Morning? I could pick them up on the way out of town. What else do you need? Pan gasket, cardboard creeper, torque wrench, jack, ramps, etc? BW

almost forgot: mechanic's and assistant's beverage of choice, aka "assembly lube"

Bruce, if the NAPA supplier in Denver has the bearings I will have them Tuesday morning. If you could bring a tourque wrench and scrapper that would be great. I should have everything else I need.

Hey Glen,
Here's a crazy idea...I see that Napa isn't able to say online which store has the bearings, but if you can find out in the morning, I could swing by and pick them up and then bring them up to you. Maybe you could meet me at Vail Pass summit or anywhere else that is convenient. This way you'd have them by noon or so tomorrow. Would this help you out? If so, I'll send you my phone # and we'll set it up. |

Glen, you didn't let that Swede work on your jeep at BHR did you? That guy could break an anvil with a rubber hammer. I'm not going to be at camp till Thursday afternoon if you need anything let me know. Keith
