Does anyone have any plans or can you show me what you have done for building a rear bumper/ swing tire carrier. I'm looking at finishing up the 47 and I want to build the rear bumper, but I also wanted to incorporate a swing tire and gas can. Let me know what you have for info. Mine is a resto-mod, so not looking for stock looks or at least not concerned with a stock look. Thanks

I am planning a rear tire carrier as well. I am designing one that will attach to the frame/rear cross member and NOT to the body. There are a lot of good designs if you do a Google search.

I have one designed that will attach to the Body. But I have added 1/4" X 3" angle and a flat plate to reinforce the area on either side of the Tailgate surround where this will attach and then tie into my full coverage roll bar plates. This is all inside the Wheel House and can not be seen unless your standing on your head looking up under the back corner of the Tub. If you look through my Project thread on Chug A Lug here in the Project forum you can see some photos.

It is NOT a Jeep Willys! It is a Willys jeep.

Keep sending those pictures guys. My big debate is should I go the new modern way of spindle and wheel bearing on the pivot point or just a simple bolt through pivot point. The end user plan is to have a gas can, shovel and Hi-Lift jack on it. Oh and my CB antenna mount. I know the wheel bearing set up is superior to just a bolt through, but is it worth the extra cash to have it sooth. Let me know What you think, gotta get this done this week.

Your CB antenna will work better if its grounded and attached to the Tub.

I posted a group of pictures of the one my son built for me. They are on the 3B page. Just click on my handle and click on subjects by-----, there is a thread showing the build.

I brought the topic back to the top. Go to the CJ3B bulletin board and then down to the Cj3B projects.

Rick, did you go all the way through your bumper with the pivot pin ? This is what I started today. I also ordered a A to Z fab. kit, so I have to wait now to get the pivot pin and latch etc. It will be finished the day that comes in. I chested to the drivers side to see if I can get a Jerry can on passenger side. Not sure with a 35 inch tire if its going to work. You can see the white outline of where the tire will be. I also made the bumper to match the lines of the original tin bumper. I like the looks, even though its not stock, it kind of looks it.

chuckles how long ago did you install that one ? Did you back it up on the other side of the sheet metal? I was thinking about one like that, but I am hanging a 35 X 1250. I wasn't sure if I went through the sheet metal if it would eventually pull out. I like that one though.

This one is about 35 years old. It was built by my grandfather. It is backed up on the inside of the sheet metal with a plate. The sheet metal is sandwiched between the two plates, it seems to do the job well. I haven't had any problems with the sheet metal pulling out... but I'm not hanging a 35 on it.

Thanks Jason. I have an early CJ5 that I am looking to built one for as well and that will only be a narrow 32, so I think one like yours would work. Thanks and can you draw up a blue print for me ? Only kidding.

I wish I had a print package for it. I've been asked for drawings multiple times. Maybe it's time to start modeling it in SolidWorks...

I forgot I'd posted about this but thought I'd add a link as it is on the same subject.
Since vernco.com isn't up anymore, I googled vernco rear spare carriers and found some additional images of the same "swing-down" types. I should also give credit to a 3B owner that has a similar carrier on his rebuilt '53: Edited by Rus Curtis - 31 Jan. 2017 at 3:32pm |

Hey Bruce. I'm thinking about something like this for Grampa's Jeep. How is that thing attached at the top. Could you get a few more pics when you have a minute please? I'm also looking at t his one that Rus Curtis pointed out. It looks pretty un-invasive. I'm just wondering of one modified it to hold a jerry can as well, if that would make it so heavy it would tear the tailgate chain tabs off. |
