What a great read, and I bet it was an even better in person. Thank you for letting us live the trip thru you, who knows we might meet up in Moab in the future and relive your trip over a cold brew!

It sort of reminds me of putting around in my MB 40+ years ago.
Moab is one of my favorite areas and I'm happy you made it there. |

I wanted to find out what the problem was in Kansas, and wound up watching a couple of hours worth of video's to find out. I'm not sure whether I've ever seen a timing gear separate like that. I may have once, but only once if I have, and I don't remember what vehicle. Did you say that the engine was rebuilt before you started out? Was the fiber timing gear replaced at that time?
It almost hurt to watch you two guys struggle with your problems, I wanted to help you so bad. Some easy checks you could have done would have saved you so much time, trouble, and expense. But I remember some young guys 45-50 years ago who did the same kinds of things  and hopefully we all learn from these experiences. I have to hand it to you, you didn't give up  and in the end you had a great time. This is something you will remember forever, and years from now you'll say, "Why in the he11 did we do that? Oh well, I'm glad we did!" Now, are you ready to drive to Whitewood, South Dakota in June, Northern Colorado in July and Southern Colorado in September?

Great write up! Congratulations on the trip. Hope you can wheel with us in Southern Indian in August. Or make it down for the 25 Willys Reunion in May 19th and 20th. |

David,
This was epic! I anxiously awaited every update from you in text and video as you began your journey and every milestone along the way. What fun, what adventure, what a great attitude and outlook you brought to us "mature" fellas. I was taken back to 1989 when I was 20 and got my 2a. I had the exact same zeal and excitement you did as you learned what the little Willys could do. I heard my voice, through the transcenion of nearly three decades, speaking in excited disbelief what the little Go Devil with short little 538 claws could accomplish. I know somehow the GI's, for which this little quarter-ton implement was designed to serve and protect, stood in the same disbelief and amazement as you and I when they saw what heart the Toledo miracle had. You, me, the GI's, and everyone connected to a flathead, flatfender Willys are kindred peoples sharing a gift from designers and engineers we will never know. They could not have realized that what they were creating would be a timeless marvel to many generations. Or maybe, that's exactly the concept with which they started... I hope to be able to jeep with you someday my youthful friend, Rick |

That reminds me of the line from Bill Mauldin's story of the hot-rodder in Korea, when he's talking to the motor pool sergeant about hot rods and jeeps and he says, "They do it all with gears." Then he proceeds to drop a V-8 into a jeep and becomes a general's driver... |
