Ewwwe, A Ford motor in a Jeep? My first Jeep was MB so I am familiar with GPWs. I think if I was going to do another motor install I would do a small Ford motor as the distributor is in a better place.

I needed an engine for this project, no flat heads were available and the pinto came in the car for $100.
The 350 Chevy had destroyed the T90A so I refreshed it with all new bearings and T90C gears. After I got started on the Pinto engine I was made aware of four flat heads in a garage in a near by town. When the hood is repaired and on I will not advertise the Pinto engine. |

Simplistically speaking (and just quoting numbers NOT 'seat of the pants' feel) you may be somewhat accurate. Now, let's make the same 'upgrades' to a 2000cc Pinto motor that you are making to your little "hot rod" 134....ie improved carburetion, exhaust, ignition and compression. ( because that's going to cost the same for both motors, ......Weber and header doesn't know the difference in motors so cost is comparable) Well, maybe I'm wrong but that sorta makes it 'not so close' anymore....(with much more addition potential from the Ford motor) Added horsepower AND torque combined with 5.38s make a pretty well behaved and 'usable' on AND off-road rig. I just know if both motors were sitting there on the floor which one I would pick. That's my choice.......not expecting to change any minds here. |

To answer your question there is no possible way to know how many Willys have Pinto engines in them. The closest you could come would be if Novak and anyone else who ever made a conversion were to tell you their total production numbers then make a wild estimate as to how many ever actually got completed and then subtract how many got swapped out or wrecked or rotted away. Another words a WILD GUESS.
As the power question well this engine the TL20H 1971 to 1974 99 HP with 115ftlbs of torque and 23LL 1974 to 1980 made 88 HP 118ftlb of torque Many other versions of the engine were used both in Europe and the US up until 1997. The 134L stock is rated at 60BHP and 105ftlbs in an off road situation torque is more important then HP it would seam the Pinto engines are a small improvement around 9-11.5% Edited by Mark W. - 17 Nov. 2017 at 10:26pm |

It is powerful compared to a 134......I think you will like it.
They rev alot better than a 134. |

The M-38 is out of the garage on its own power. The 1976 Pinto engine is responsive and sounds powerful due to the shorty glass pac.
Still lots to do. Glass in the windshield, hood repair, speedometer repair and gas gauge replacement. Other things will show up as we get some miles on the Jeep I am sure. I do not do pictures for now. So imagine a black Jeep with Huger Orange spoke wheels and 31X10.50R15 tires. No name yet. Edited by 64CJ5 - 17 Nov. 2017 at 4:36pm |

I've seen pictures of a Ford 2.8 v-6 in an 3A. They moved the grill and radiator out to on top of the bumper. Really odd looking from the side.

I have a 48 CJ2 that I put a 96 Ranger motor in. This motor is fuel injected, computer controlled and it works great.
I've had Jeeps for 45 years and have put V8 Chevys, 6 cylinder Chevys and V6 Buicks in them and this Ranger motor is the best working swap I've ever done. It starts good, runs good, has plenty of power and is easier on gas than the 134. The only drawback that I experienced is the brake fade as a result of the higher speeds the high revving Ford motor delivers, BUT a set of 11 inchers from a Willys wagon has solved that problem. I was so impressed with this Ranger motor, I swapped a 3.0 V6/5 speed Ranger motor into my 51 Ford F1 and that's a sweetheart. I have a 53 3B with the original F 134 that runs good but I give some thought to swapping in a 3.0 Ford V6 into it. The Ford V6 is a 60 degree whereas the Buick is 90 degree which makes it wider and a tighter squeeze. |

Since it had a SBC engine in it already, why not go with a Chevy V-6? It would have the same bell housing bolt pattern, & the engine mounts would be very close. It seems to me it would be the easiest fix, except another SBC, which IMHO, Is too much power. They break things. AMHIK!!
Note, right now my DD is a Pinto wagon that was converted into a Ranchero about 30 years ago. That engine purrs like a kitten, but it has some blow by. It also is lacking in power. It could use a rebuild, but I doubt that the rig is worth it. Heck, I have not priced the parts yet, but IME, they are very available. |

Pinto engines are a great way to get a little more HP, with less weight. Even later Ranger engines are pretty much the same thing.

Just keep the hood down. Most people won't know the difference anyway, wait, it is running?.
Personally, I would never do that to a poor old Jeep but I might stick in a V6 or a SBC. I have done one of those things in my past |

Tom,
I am good with whatever. There is one in Columbus, Ohio. It also has the power brake unit from the Pinto. It has a dual master cylinder pushing standard 9" drum brakes. The Pinto has a timing belt which can be changed on the trail if need be - been there. He had a bolt back out of the flywheel one time and it knocked a hole in the bell housing. Thats about what I know. Be Safe Out There. |

Stev. The M-38 came to me with out the 350 Chevy the previous owner had in it. I looked for a replacement L head. I found the complete pinto engine. Then three L heads came up close by but they did not have any thing on them, water pump, starter, etc. The frame part of the motor mounts were gone and the fire wall was hacked. This Jeep was in pieces.
Muley I have looked at the Blue Mule and talked with Mike about it. I would like to know how many Jeeps out there have this conversion and where they are. Edited by 64CJ5 - 24 May 2017 at 11:48pm |
