I am replacing the shackle bracket and shackles on a 1946 CJ2a. The ones I am taking off were riveted and welded to the frame. I am planning on using grade 8 bolts and nuts. do I need to also weld the brackets ?
Where they welded from the factory?

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeel lets just say that all of the spring hangers on my 3B just have rivets but a PO decided to do some welding. Jeeps aren't known for the quality of some of the welds.

I also had to remove the brackets on my 46 2A (to repair the frame and fit new brackets) - they were riveted but also had a short bead of weld towards the end of each long edge. Looked absolutely factory to me. I replaced the rivets with bolts too - but used my cheap gasless MIG to try to replicate the weld.

Easy to do because as Unkamonkey implied, the welding was often functional, not neat!

My frame was completely stripped down, so I welded and bolted.

Pretty sure the welds are factory. I'm not sure how functional they are. I have wondered if they were tacked in place at the factory to keep them from moving during the process of drilling and riveting them on. When I replaced mine I used grade 8 bolts then welded them on. Luckily my welding skills make the welds look pretty original, but not pretty.

Thanks for the information. Has anybody that just bolted them on had any problems with the bolts coming loose?

I think it would work OK if they are threadlocked and torqued down well. My only worry would be the long term possibility that the bolt holes would be elongated or enlarged from movement of the springs being transferred to the bolts.

Factory welds were never up to todays standards but they seem to hold in there after how many years? If you use the right parts and do the proper torque I wouldn't have a concern.

Be sure to use grade 8 nuts with your grade 8 bolts.

And if you use washers, use grade 8 washers.
There's a reason it's called Ol' Unreliable
