So I'm checking and RE packing the bearings on my Spen trailer for the trip the Alaska.
I got th bearings out and they just need packing and perhaps getting some spares to have along and I ran into the odd seal they have inside the wheel hub. Anyone ever seen one of these? There's no rubber on it at all but it seemed to be a decent enough seal. |

By the way, it had what I imagine are the original
Bearings in it, they were bower bearings. Thinking of getting replacements to save the originals. |

your missing the other half of that seal. I just pulled mine out and they have a metal insert with a leather seal. Part is labeled National 5852. I haven’t found a cross reference yet.

I see you have a square axle and I have seen that on another Spen. I have a round axle. Not sure if it’s original or they changed them throughout the production years. Do you have the bearing numbers?

Yes, mine is the square axle. Mine seems to be early based on the tailgate layout. Let me check. I had the bearings out of it this summer and bought a spare just in case.

well I hope this helps someone with a Spen. My trailer is titled 1952 and it has a round axle and 6 lugs. I would have no idea if it’s original or not.
These are the parts I pulled off the hub Inner bearing Timkin 15118 Inner cup Timkin 15250X Outer bearing Timkin 09074 Inner cup Timkin 09196 Seal National 5852 I replaced it with Federal Mogul 5796 Picture of new seal next to old. There was no cross reference so I went by dimensions. It fits pretty good. |

I know this thread is old, but you said you hope your cross reference on the axle seals helps someone else. I'm here to tell you - THANKS! Just what I was looking for as I work on my old SPEN after being away for about 4 years.
