Thank you for the clarification. One further question. Was this road used by the Italian Army in the attack against the French in June 1940 ?

Yes you are right! In this region the border is on the top of the mountain and follow the chain of the Alps.
There are a lot of fortifications Italian and French, you can visit these Forts they are very interesting.
I know very well the Normandy but in this 5 years in this region, I have visited several forts.
One of the more famous fortifications build in this period was the fort of Chaberton the "Cuirassé des nuages" translation: Dreadnought of cloud. Fort du mont Chaberton, was built by the Italian at 3130 meters on the top of the mountain Mont Chaberton. Is the highter Military fortification in the world!
This fort has 8 canon of 149mm . This fort was build in 12 years by the Italian and finished in 1910. These canons has an coverage of 18 kilometer. When Italian declare the war to France the 12 th june 1940.
These battery start to fight the French positions. But French Artillery (more famous than the Italian one) destroyed this fort in one day with two battery of mortar of 280mm. The Lieutenant Miguet, ask to a staff of engineers to calculate the trajectory for the mortar shell with an parabolic of 10 km and an altitude of 5000 meters. The Italian never seen where these mortar shell was fight! In one day six turets was completely destroyed and the 24 th june the armistice was signed between Italian and French.
In 1940, This is the only battle the French win but they confirm the French superiority of mountain troops and weapons.

You can see this incredible fort and story on these web site:
