FINALLY!!  Starting My restoration on the 1947 CJ2A hunting jeep w/title that I traded  M37 engine parts for when I was stationed at FT Benning Ga 2010.  This old beast had a tow bar and was dragged out to the woods for deer and bird hunting back in the day,  No muffler, no registration, and lots of shotgun shells and rifle rounds under and in the tub when i lifted it off the frame.

This 6 Volt beast is original and complete regards original equipment, carb, v-regulator, generator, etc, data plates, dash was original .... had an unique handmade fuel tank and interesting seats that were keepers in my book.  The tub was TOAST and not salvageable.  The front fenders, hood and grill were in very good condition as were the original wheels.  There was no windshield or tailgate or top-bow set.  Engine and drive-train was complete and free moving.  All in all a solid starting framework for a restoration

Three weeks work Continued:  Tore the engine down. One of my buddies has a tank and offered to boil it out.  Good news bad news:   Cleaned up great, but I have a cracked block!  Noticed that the exhaust manifold was broken and it seems that all that hot exhaust all those years blowing on the block eventually cracked it right at that spot. The crack runs down the side of the engine and across the top of the block and into both valve seats on both sides of the crack.  I've decided on a new block.  All the other components mic out as good with the exception of the pistons, someone on a previous rebuild crosshatched the skirts to take out what I will presume was some piston slap.  I ordered 4 new standard size pistons for my rebuild.

Noticed that the transfer case on the drive-train is OD green.  will need to explore that a bit more to see if it came of an MB or a M38 ... trany and transfer gears are in good shape other than new seals and gaskets which I will replace.  Will replace throw-out bearing and clutch disc too.

Final Update, Week four- bringing my post up to date as of Thanksgiving:  Picked up my frame from the sandblaster yesterday 22 November .. he did an excellent job and the cost was extremely reasonable based on my past experience and previous projects .. I have all my components rebuilt and standing by for paint:  starter, generator, fuel pump, distributor, etc, etc etc ..of course not all will be painted .. but all are rebuilt, cleaned and looking as good as I can humanly make them considering their previous condition.  I prefer to rebuild vs buying new if I can.  The exception I made for this project was the engine block, new pistons, oil pump, and water pump.  Every block I looked at down in Phoenix as a possible replacement had been rebuilt/ bored out so many timed and  sizes that I just didn't want to mess with any of the half dozed I looked at!!  I will prime and paint the frame this week.

I also picked up a cheery 1942 WWII Ford Jeep that's been sitting in a hanger here for years.  it runs but will need some work to bring it back to original condition.  It does have an AZ title and I paid $3300 for it to include a mess of WWII memorabilia, to include weapons (rifles, a complete 50mm mortar, bayonets) uniform goodies, helmets to include Japanese and US, field phones US and Japanese, ammo cans, fuel cans and a pretty good 30 Cal air cooled mock up, 2 WWII stretchers and misc belted blank ammo.

Had to update my post on the new Jeep because even thou the title said Williys, after I got a good look at it back at the shop I realized that it is a Ford ... Ordered a new fuel pump for it so that I can get it started ....want to hear it run and at least take it for a spin to see how the drivetrain checks out.  I now have a windshield for my 47 CJ project Clap !!

so did you order one of the new production blocks available?
Not that I need one but I’m really curious how they are.

Yes, new production block ..was not planning on spending that kind of coin. .. but with the military discount, and  some discount coupons I had, it brought the cost down to a dull roar.  I'll post pics as it is due in on Monday the 27th and it will be nice to have new block to build on.  Also ordered 4 new pistons.  I'll also be able to return some items like soft plugs and valve guides that I'd ordered for the old block.

In spite of a strong wind today, I was still able to get my primer on the frame, hood and fenders.  The hood is in really rough shape and will be replaced.  Looks like someone took a hammer to it back in the day and just beat it all to he!! ...dents everywhere.

Fenders need work but are very salvageable. I welded in my new battery box and patched some other parts of the frame that needed a little attention.  I picked up a new rear frame member that I will be installing as soon as it arrives as the one on there now us in pretty bad shape and part of it is missing on the right side.

Are you going to keep that approach-angle-killing, ultra-heavy, totally unnecessary front cow-catcher bumper?  Not that there's anything wrong with that...

New block in today, looks very nice...excited to get started on my engine rebuild ...shots of the accompanying paperwork, block, and crate base.  Opened it up for inspection on arrival and before cutting the driver loose as the top of the crate had some minor damage did the same when the tub arrived..in both cases everything looked good.

Also got the 42 Ford  fired up today ..threw a little fueI in the carb and cranked her over on the new battery ..popped right off and ran for about 15 seconds.  Installed a new fuel pump but the lines that the previous folks put on there were all wrong so I will have to make new ones tomorrow as I ran out of time today.  Luckily the gas tank has aviation fuel (leaded) in it which does not go bad so I expect that the carb will not be varnished up after sitting all these years.
