Happy New Year to all my fellow Jeepers!!

Back in the shop a bit the past week and have had an opportunity to do a little catch up on the 47CJ project.  Have the new seals in and the rear axles and new brakes and cylinder setups on the Dana 41 complete. .. just need to button up the differential cover (gaskets in route) and get the new pinion seal in to complete that project.

Finished my rear frame member install to include the rivits and a bit of welding. Quick coat of primer is on and I'll shoot a coat of gloss black once I button up the axle.

The engine rebuild is just about complete.  My new head is on backorder for 3 to 4 weeks so the plan is to get the flywheel and clutch installed, get the engine and trany mated up on the frame and slap all the goodies on the engine,  finish the drivetrain, and then install the head when it arrives.

The Dana 25 Front axle just needs to be reassembled, new innerseals are in and everything has been cleaned up and new brakes and cylinders are mounted on the backing plates and ready for install.

I still want to go thru my Ross box as the bushings are a bit worn.

COL K: Where are the new L134 blocks cast and machined? I suspect perhaps India...?

If you get a chance....I'd love to see an outdoors pic of that WWII halftrack that's in the non-jeep side of your garage. I suspect other CJ2A'ers would, too.
Is it a White? Autocar? Diamond-T? My dad worked at The Autocar Co. in Ardmore, PA, on the halftrack production line briefly after graduating from high school in 1942, before he enlisted in the Navy.  I've always been interested in them.

Thanks!

LR47 Looks like the block is cast and machined in our colony of "China" Wink ..  Overall I've been satisfied with the workmanship with a couple of exceptions.  Went to install the oil pump using my original bolts, and between the new oil pump which is not quite the same size as the original and the new block the original bolts bottomed out before tightening up.  Unfortunately next bolt length is to short to and I didn't feel like cutting bolts to fit so I landed up having to grind down some flat washers to fit around the pumps contours to account for the difference.

My halftrack, the "African Queen" is a 1943 White M16MGMC (Multiple Gun Motor Carriage) Antiaircraft Halftrack.  She was converted to a M16A2 in 1952 for the Korean war.  She was # 315 of 413 total M16A2s converted and is the only original complete surviving A2 left out of the 413.  She has her original WWII paint, drivetrain, Maxson Quad Mount Turret for her 4-50 CAL Heavy Barrel Browning Machine Guns, original working radios, crew weapons, equipment, etc  She saw combat service on several continents and in three major conflicts, WWII-ETO, Korean War, Vietnam War and Combat in East Africa with the French Foreign Legion.  I recovered and returned her to the US in 2006 on my own dime while serving in the Army.  No easy task given the logistics, politics, red-tape and good ol BS.

I used to drive up to a lake near me and there was 2 of them sitting in a field. I had to go out and check them out. One trip, both were gone. No idea where they went.

Wow, she's a survivor!  Congrats on being able to get her home.  Man, if that rig could tell us her stories...

Nice halftrack. The white round emblems, are those not the palm tree emblems of the French Foreign legion ?

Thank you all, several of my buds said I should get it all down in a book along with our mission set in Africa. Might make  interesting reading if I could get it declassified LOL.

The white emblem is the FFL marking.  It is a desert scarab with the number 1 painted in the middle.  I'll get a shot of it and post a pic.  I have seen palm tree markings used on WWII German Africa Corp Tanks and vehicles in various museums.

Just for the record, the defense contractor in York, PA, that did the AA-halftrack conversions is spelled Bowen & McLaughlin. Now part of BAE and still a major military equipment engineering company.

COL-K--Thanks for posting the halftrack pics and sharing its amazing history. White halftracks are a thing of functional beauty, in my eyes. Congrats to you for enduring a ton of hassle to save this machine from the "gate guard" fate that has befallen so many historic military vehicles and aircraft.

The Israelis upfitted many of their ex-US 'tracks with 6-71 Jimmy diesels, further extending their service lives.

RED, check regards the BM ..it's on my A2 data plate and I did the research while I was attending school in York, PA post Army retirement.  I taught OLLI courses at PENN State (and am doing so in Prescott ).  One of my very senior students actually worked on the M16A2 conversions at BM and retired from the company.

While down range, the IDF half tracks that I observed were all fitted with the Detroit Diesel 6V53s that we used in our M113's.  The Israelis even retrofit the exhaust by cutting the front fenders on the track and welding on a cover for the mufflers. I Believe they probably used that engine because the bought a sh!tload of our M113s and the parts supply chain is easier when you use the same engine.  Besides that, it's a very reliable engine and drivetrain.  The only trouble I remember having with the engine was the quillshaft which ran the blower, they broke quite often (crappy design ), but we're easy to replace on the fly. I was a (grunt/earth-pig) enlisted Infantryman and an Armor Officer in my previous life.

Silly me. You are correct. The WWII German Africa Corps used the palm tree.

COL-K: thanks for the correction RE: 6V-53 vs 6-71 Jimmys in the IDF 'tracks. That's an important factual distinction. Please keep us 2A jeepers apprised on your M2 resto progress; it appears that many of us are interested.

RED, No correction!!  Knowing IDF they may have used Jimmys.   He!! those guys are so inovative they could probably use my Briggs and Stratton push mower engine to power a halftrack, I was just stating what I had observed LOL .

Have had some time between watch and clock shop and hanger the last three days so have been all over it!  Finished up both front and rear axles, sourced, tore down and cleaned up hubs for my front axles, filled my diffs, and got my Ross box off for rebuild.  Pulling old steering wheel off while I'm at and prep it for the new wheel and get the new horn wire kit in.

FRAME STATUS:  Brakes, bearings, axles, seals, tie rods, all other steering components, shocks, rear frame member complete.  New front horns in process now and new front bumper to follow.
