got my 1942 Ford GPW started today ... new fuel pump, battery, fuel lines ..and a badly needed oil change ...she fired  right up.  Tooled around the hangers and she seems to run fine.

Warmed up enough to throw some paint on the frame ...also cut the cow-catcher bumper off.  Wow that thing was built and really put together!!  Have to finish up on the remnants and then some work on the horns.  New bumper and rear frame member in transit.  Then the frame will be finished!  Next will be the brake lines, brakes, install new motor and transmission mounts, mount the trany and drive shafts and of course all new seals when I do the brakes and the drive shafts.  It's getting colder and the hanger is not heated, so I'll probably work on the engine rebuild back at the house.  I'm also in the middle of a remodel, so things are going to slow down a bit on this project while I concentrate on getting that finished for the next several weeks.  I'll continue my updates as they occur.

Making some progress.  New brake lines installed, master cylinder, new hoses, stearing nuckle seals and felt sweep, tearing into the axles so that I can get the seals installed and then the new brake shoes, hardware etc..  Doing my own linings.  Halted in my tracks today because I needed a brake drum puller.  And no, a regular gear puller (and I have just about every type) won't work on these old beast, at least not on this particular old beast!  No one in town carries it, he!! no one in town at any of the so called auto stores to includes Sears even knows what one is!!!!!!   No wonder Sears is going out of business. They sell everything in the Craftsman tool section but tools!!!!  OK, got that rant out of my system!

Started my rebuild on the new block.  Got the valve train in and adjusted, cold settings.  Front plate, cam gear, generator mount and new bushings. Going to polish my crank (now there's a thought Clap ) before moving to the next step, crank install, new pistons (original rods) and then head, sump, oil pump and distributor combo (remember the timing), oil pan, then paint.  And then all the other goodies.

Some pics of progress.   Going out of town for few days as my daughter is graduating from St. Scholastica, Duluth MN this weekend and we are celebrating.  Am setting aside a day Wednesday to clean and organize my shop before heading out, it needs it.  By the time I get back my puller should be here and I can finish my axles and brakes.

Good eye, It is a M45-F.  Restored except for the gunners seat area ... just need to finish wiring up my switches and the commo box, and then the trunion wiring for the gun solenoids.  Motor, gearboxes, bearings, switches new wire harness etc on underside of gun platform is all restored.  Turret is for my track.  Recovered all of it from the East Africa desert and returned to the US in 2007.  It's all original, paint, engine, armor etc.  Only one of 413 built left intact and complete.  it's number 315 of the run converted to M16A2's for Korea by Bowen McGloflen, York, PA in 1952 . I have a tendency to find interesting things. Found two complete WWI Whippet Tanks in Asscrackistan in 2003, they were flown to the Patton mueseum.  Found a beautiful, complete and pristine WWII USMC Cleetrack Trencher in the woods in GA, arranged to have it flown via the Air Force to the USMC Museum at Camp Pedelton CA.  I'm into the historic aspects of thewe old military vehicles and love to share their history with the public.

Did some housekeeping today and then decided to tear into that rear frame member on the CJ.  Bubba had been a busy boy over the years on this old huntin Jeep and there have been lots of bolts, backer plates and welds put on that old frame member.  Used my cutting wheel rather than the grinder to go after the welds and the old rivets as I was trying to preserve as much of the frame gussets as possible.  More of a struggle than I figured, but I finally pounded, cut and cold chiseled the old piece off.

After cleaning everything up and getting a good dry fit and alignment, I'm ready to rivet and bolt all back together tomorrow.  Called it a day after the sparks from the cutting wheel lit my work shirt and poly undershirt up.  I usually wear my heavy duty work apron, but was in a hurry after a quick sandwich to just clean up a little area and get finished and didn't put it on.  Lucky that poly didn't stick to my skin, flames were quite impressive and so was my response  Confused.

Tis the season for family commitments and travel, so I've had very little time to spend in the shop.  I did manage to get some work done on my axles and frame to include new shocks, tie-rod ends, front brakes rebuilt, front axles pulled and cleaned up and inner seal install started.  I also started going thru my drives shafts and discovered that the rear drive shaft has no zerk fitting for greasing the splines.  Gotta imagine it's supposed to.  Does anyone have a pic of the drive shafts with fitting? I need to repair mine.

I hope you're also going to rotate the two sections of that drive shaft so the yokes line up correctly...

Like in anything you inherit or purchase used, or in my case "really used" your always going to find lots of stuff that the other fella left unfinished or f-up when he had the vehicle. ..so yes correctin thing like offset yokes when I get the shafts rebuilt,  missing brake drums,  cow catcher bumpers etc is part of that process on the project ...I'm also going to leave a couple of items on here that I like,  the rear turn signals in the two pipes on my new rear frame member, and the overbuilt rear hitch and pintle hook because its my heep and that's my preference Big smile .

Oh, now I gotta look for the rear hitch.  I saw the pipe-protected turn signals.

Okay, I see the rear hitch.  It's just your average CJ drawbar with a pintle hook.

I was stationed there 18 plus months (SPEC-OPS) lots of time to look around the immediate neighborhood. The Queen was sitting out in the desert on the edge of the old WWII airfield that the Italians had established back in the day when they invaded Ethiopia.  Suprisingly the old defensive works, trenches, cement revetments, barbwire stakes and wire still remain on the beach side of old airfield. The French airfield operates nearby and the French Foreign Legion has a post there.  I grabbed the Queen from the FFL as we were doing a bit of training together. It was just scrap to them and technically since it belonged to them it made the paperwork easy.
I shipped her home by boat on my dime with all the correct import paperwork and a  SH!T-LOAD of hassle to keep her out of the hands of the brass and all the staff weenies especially the JAG (Off) Officer who really wanted it as a trophy for the two star to bring back to the US, where they would have slapped a coat of paint on her and a plaque and left her sitting on a slab somewhere to rot in the sun. Not giving a sh!t about her historic value, getting her running again or sharing her with generations of Americans.
It was NO easy task!!!!

Nothing average about that old hitch with an "F" script pintle hook that will look very nice on my Ford GPW Wink  Ol Unreliable.
