Monsoon season here right now, we have several weeks of rain and it started early this year. It rains two to three times a day usually via thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds. Phoenix has 4 years worth of water stored underground and in my area we have a huge aquifer and several lakes and rivers that are replenished each year by these rains. My pool appreciates the water as does my water bill!

Got my interior painted before the 1st Monsoon rain today. Thinking of clear coating the paint. It's already rained twice today at the time of my post.

Mike, new to the bodywork and paint thing, but with all the info out there I'm thinking that the quality primer, paint and clearcoat that I'm using will keep the color vibrant for years to come. Products for the most part continue to improve and I'm thinking are more robust than what was used in the past. I will be handing these Jeeps off to my children in the next few years and I don't want them having to deal with any major issues, especially body and paint stuff.
Must admit that the lead based primer and paint used back in the day on my halftrack has really stood the test of time regards how well it has stood up to the elements. Edited by mkoloc - 15 July 2018 at 9:31am |

Joe, talked to few folks who do this for a living and at the end of the day I'm using enamel paints. Have had good success so far. depending on the color, I use a hardner .... this particular enamel is mixed, with 1 part reducer, 1 part hardner to 8 parts paint. With primer and these old bodies I use a good filler primer, something that I can sand and will also fill in small imperfections. This is the 1st time I've used a clearcoat, and I'm very happy with the finish. Will be curious to see how it holds up with some wear and tear.

Col. K, how much airborne grit are you finding in the painted surfaces? Or are you shooting the tub under cover then bringing outside to cure?

Under cover then out to cure .. Prescott has the best air quality in the US. I'm at an altitude of 5600 feet ..so no small flying bugs here (knats or misq). No grit with all the rain. Clearcoated
outside.

Prescott, AZ--the Jeep Painter's Heaven!
Where else on the planet can you shoot clear outdoors without threat of grit?

With rains like these two to three times a day the air is clean and fresh ..of course there is the drawback of having to literally walk between the raindrops! This afternoons storm dumped 2.4 inches of rain ... total so far for three days is 6+ inches!

The Arizona Desert will be green, green, green after this toad-strangler of a rainstorm. Totally overwhelming your gutters.
And unfortunately keeping your 'Arizona Panzers' inside...

Decided to get the frame ready for the tub since its almost done. installed the exhaust system and made and installed the rear wire harness sans cable clamps which I'll finish tomorrow. Will also solder in my wires for my rear turn signals. Rear harness also includes the wires for the trailer socket. Left plenty of loom and wire up front to clamp to the tub and for the dash.

Tub paint is finished as is tailgate and grill today ... going to let it sit for a couple of days and then move it to the shop for install on the frame. Fuel tank is also done and sitting in the tub. Finished the rear turn signal install this afternoon, they look good with the retro lenses. Going to finish the tub, wire harness, seats etc., and then will tackle the fenders, hood and windshield.

Day of Days!!! Decided paint was cured enough so I put my body on the frame. Have a couple or questions. How far (if it even does) does the tub go past the rear frame member? Or does it sit flush with the frame? Assume the front tub frame members on each side of the tub sit evenly on the frame side to side as long as steering column is centered in its opening.
