I currently have two rows of 5 fluorescent lights. So a total of 10 dual tube, 8ft lights. My workshop is 32 x 80. I'm interested in putting more efficient lighting in. Of course, I don't want to spend a ton of money doing it. Anybody updated their fluorescent lighting? Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance. |

I just picked up some four foot LEDs. Extremely bright - like looking at the sun. At the moment I would not recommend the 40 Watt dual row LEDs. I put duct tape over the LEDs so when you glace at them you don't get the eye burn.

Here is a LONG thread on shop lighting over on The Garage Journal forum.
I just installed 6 LED fixtures from Lowes in a 30x40x14 shop. I think I overdid it. They are really bright. |

I got some 4' LED lights from Costco last year. They were on sale for about $20, I think.

I have quite a few 4' LED overhead utility lights from Sam's Club at $35 each that I've installed in my garage. They do an excellent job lighting up the work areas as well as the formerly dark corners of the garage. I highly recommend them.

You could also look into the T5 florescent lights. The are extremely efficient. I have them in my shop and I actually had to lower the sensitivity on my welding helmet! It would go black if I looked up! Lol

Thanks for all the feedback gentlemen. Glad to hear I don't have to spend $150 per set to get adequate (or blinding) light. That was going to add up quickly. Sounds like I may even be able to go from 10 sets of light to possibly 6. That would be a lot more efficient.

I picked up four - 4" LED replacement bulbs at my local Lowes last year that were on clearance but they don't work with all ballasts. I've collected a variety of fixtures from over the years and ended up swapping ballasts into where I wanted to use them and they are quite bright - I never complain about too much lighting with the way my vision has deteriorated in the last 10 years.
While I was deployed this year I had local purchased some 100w equivalent bulbs for the tent I was working in that was like dark mood lighting and boy did improve on the shadow effects we had... So recently I've noticed that regular LED lamp bulbs have really come down in price so bought several 4 pks in the last two weeks and I'm slowly replacing the curly compact bulbs as they burn out and getting much brighter light as well.

Bought a couple of 4 bulb T5's from a Habitat Re-store for $10 each. They are operating room lighting. No more dungeon for me!

I just put a 4' LED over my bench, it's brighter than the double tube 8' fluorescent I took down. I found 8' LED replacement tubes that fit in my T12 type fluorescent fixtures, just have to bypass the ballast. 4 for $89.00 on Amazon, that way I can do a couple lights at a time.

You mentioned these at the FCT in 2015 (?) and that's why I went and got mine. Thanks for the suggestion, Fred! |
