hi gang,
If i line the dot up on the camshaft gear with the dot on the crankshaft gear...does that mean piston number 1 should be at top dead center? Also- i noticed some slack in the timing chAin. Is there any adjustment that can be done?

Loose timing chain is adjusted by replacing the chain and the gears.
Walks has a kit. I don’t know if it’s any good or not.

thank you for the reply- now when the dot on the cam gear is across from the dot on the crank gear....does this mean anything related to TDC on cylinder number one? I checked the timing hole and the flywheel is not showing the top dead center scribe mark at this position. Please help :)

I just found this in the Universal Service Manual, page D-48.

You can download your own copy of the Universal Service Manual here thanks to our member Art C (48cj2a}:  https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/universal-service-manual-for-jeep-vehicles_topic28616.html

Here's the pertinent part (red highlights are mine.) It says that on a chain drive, when the marks are lined up #4 is at TDC, not #1. So if your flywheel is installed correctly you should not be able to see the timing marks in the view hole. If  you want to see the pictures, download a copy of the manual.

D-82. Install Camshaft Sprocket and Chain
Before installing the camshaft sprocket on engines
with chain driven camshafts turn the crankshaft
so No.1 and 4 pistons are at top center as indicated
by the "TC" mark on the flywheel which can be
seen through the timing hole in the flywheel housing
on the right side of the engine, Fig. 67 and Fig; 68.
Place the camshaft sprocket on the shaft and tum
the shaft until the punch mark on the rim of the
sprocket faces the punch mark on the crankshaft
sprocket.
Remove the camshaft sprocket and place the timing
chain in position over the crankshaft sprocket. Position
the camshaft sprocket within the chain and
change the position until the screw holes in the
sprocket and camshaft match.
Timing is correct when a line drawn through the
sprocket centers cuts through the timing marks on
both sprockets. See Fig. 63. In this position No. 4
piston is at top of compression stroke and the distributor
rotor arm should be ·under the distributor
cap segment for that cylinder.

You CAN see the marks in the timing hole, regardless of which piston #1 or #4 is on the compression stroke.   BW

What Bruce said.
That's always why I wait a while before I answer technical questions. I usually screw it up.

I haven't worked on an L Head for over 40 years. I just figured it out. I stuffed in the oil pump wrong but I got it to run. It bothered me so I pulled it and clocked it correctly. Anal. Me?
