My friend is a plumber and he hates to deal with galvanized pipes. As soon as you do something on one end, they are going to start leaking somewhere else.

Well after working all day. Two trips to ACE and one into Salem to Home Depot. I can't find any more leaks and now there is no galvanized pipe left anywhere in the hot water system. A little left in the cold. That can wait for another time.
Time to nurse this cold I got from my son and get everything cleaned up. |

Well of course all could not be well in Whoville!
I went to button up the area under the down stsirs bath and the new hot water line is dripping very slowly. At one of the only two places PEX joins old galv. So in the worst place to work I am going to repipe the hot water supply to the bath. Fun this morning with my new head cold!!! Oh well tomorrow is Christmas Turkey and bonus day at work so the week isn' t a total net loss. |

You're lucky, any water line out here has to be at least 4ft deep, glad to hear you've got it fixed.

We will get into the high teens for a short time each winter but around freezing is the norm for cold. We are more of a high 30's low40's and WET winter here.

We have water. After finding out the leaking line tapped into the supply line somewhere under my 8" thick shop floor! I added two days work and about $150.00 to the total and added a completely new 3/4" PEX supply line by going up the wall of the shop and over it in the rafters. All insulated. Then back down the outside wall through the POS foundation wall under 2' of side walk to where the city removed our old meter just two years ago and tapped into the supply.
With the neighbors help I got everything hooked up about 5:00 last night we did a test and passed nothing leaked and everything except one in ground hose bib in the back yard worked (it must tie in to the bad line somewhere ). Now for two days of insulting floor repair and putting thing back where they belong. Then I can clean up the shop and find all my tools spread all over the place. Shower last night sure felt good! I have the blue polybutylene pipe that runs outside the house to the meter 250' , it's a time bomb waiting to happen. when it goes it will be a PITA, but until then I'm paying the 2 bucks a month for leak insurance that my water company charges me.
I'm glad your fixing your pipe problems and can be back on the jeep soon. Part time plumbers and jeep mechanics we all have that in common!!!

Yeah, I like my 1906 house and I have had to do many things to it. It sort of was my job at the time. Some things look crooked but I put them in plumb, the doorways are off. My house and just deal with it.

Yea I'm all good for pipe wrenches I have them from 8" to 24" and Huge channel locks and even a Vise grip thing with a Chain for pipe. As far as I can tell at the point we are this morning. I have one pipe to cut while reaching through a hole the size of a cement block and then I need to unscrew the stub. This gives me my new supply point where I will attach the new line coming in from the Old supply point at the edge of the shop floor. Then I will cut off a copper stub and use that to run the cold line to the Kitchen sink and the hose bib on the outside of the house opposite the kitchen sink.
I'll either have to cut and unscrew a galv. connection at that point of if that doesn't work I'll come all the way to the shut off valve under the sink and figure out another way to supply the hose bib. |

Good luck with the galvanized piping that stuff is a pain in the arse. Make sure you have a good pipe wrench maybe even two. Sometimes you can hit the fittings with a hammer to loosen the rust. Another idea would be a strap wrench.
When I work with galvanized pipe I will flush the line after messing with it or you could plug your toilet valve etc with rust particles. Edited by 67charger - 09 Dec. 2017 at 1:47pm |

My son came by this afternoon and we moved the freezer out of its spot and with only a little bit of destruction we were able to get to the mess of plumbing that is the downstairs bath water heater and the line going to one of the outside hose bibs. We found the one place we can cut the line coming in from the kitchen (man I hope that piece of pipe will unscrew from the Tee so I can Plug it).
We will tomorrow morning cut out a 12 x 18 access hole under the kitchen sink to see just which way we are going to route this mess. Hoping to be at Home depot before Noon buying stuff. and back home to install. |
