    Posted: 12 Jan. 2018 at 4:31pm
before I really start tearing in to my jeep, I wanted to make sure that the numbers match. Here is what I got.

Serial # 122467
Frame# 12246x (Can't read the last number, assume it's a7)
BODY # 122467
Tub # 112335
Tailgate #112307
Engine Tag 49 FAR 10090

The title says it's a 1948, but the serial# would indicate its a1947.

A little background. My grandfather bought this sometime in the 1950's. He drove it on his ranch and hunting in the big horns until 1975. It sat in his barn at his Wyoming ranch until he passed away a few years ago. I believe it is all original with the exception off a bolt on steering stabilizer and a bolt on side step on the passenger side. I plan on posting my progress in the my project section.  This question didn't seem appropriate there.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Welcome.

What is the engine number?  It can be found on the boss just above the water pump on the front of the engine.  Matching numbers on a mid production Willys Jeep is not something that really ever happened at the factory.

Post some pictures.  Dash, engine compartment, Rear seats, and so on.

Sounds like a winner so far.  Keep that step on the passenger side.   They are not that common and if you don't want it post it in the for sale section of the 2A Page someone else will want it even if it is in bad shape.

thanks. I tried taking a picture of the engine nu bee, but couldn't find it. Might have to unbolt something to see it?

I took a few pictures this morning. I have taken the body off, so you'll be able to see a lot.

Thanks is again.

You shouldn't have to unbolt anything to see the engine serial.  It should be on the engine block...top...front...just above the water pump...just behind the fan blades.  It should look something like this...

1- 1946 CJ2A
2- 1949 CJ3A

Can't answer your picture troubles, but in the Tech FAQs section of the Tech Questions and Answers forum Sean has a thread called the Spotters guide that has likes to charts on Serial numbers and such.

i'll look for the engine number tonight when i get home. the side step, i believe, is something he took off a tractor and put it on the jeep. you can kind of see it one the passenger side in the first picture.

That's a pretty big gap in ACM's to be that close, isn't it?  Mine are off by 2 and I thought that was a lot, lol

That's kind of what i thought. However, it is really close if it isn't the original. for him to have found the tailgate 28 number later as a replacement seems like finding a needle in a hay stack.

It was common practice in many states to title a vehicle when it was sold. Hence a Nov Dec Jeep arriving at a dealer ship to be sold in Jan Feb etc could easily have ended up with a next year title so to speak.

thanks. i will. and yes. it is in incredibly good shape. no cancer at all. engine has good compression on all 4 cylinders. i'm pretty sure it is all original with minimal modifications. my goal is to do a ground up restoration keeping everything as original as possible. not sure about the paint thought... it was originally blue with red wheels and well, i'm not a huge fan of that.
