One thing it means is nobody has decked the block since the engine was last assembled...  It may also mean that it's not the original engine, but I can't say for sure.  Someone here will know.

"Decked" means resurfaced by grinding.  If the deck is warped or otherwise uneven, a good shop will deck the block to make it flat again.  Some might also deck the block to increase the compression ratio.  Grinding it will usually remove the serial number, unless the shop re-stamps it, which is rare.

When an engine is rebuild in order to get the Block to Head joint as perfect as possible sometimes it is necessary to both shave a little material off the head and to do the same to the top of the block this is referred to as DECKING the block.

MY engine currently has had the Head Shaved .035" (which was done to help raise the compression ratio in a quest for more HP) and the Block has been Decked .007" (this was done to "true" it up) it also helped add to the increased compression ratio.

Bottom line is that this is not an original serial number for this engine.  It was probably restamped by a rebuilder.

There are sometimes other indicators which can help date the engine block.  There are a sequence of casting numbers on both sides along the lower part of the block...down by the oil pan.

Wouldn't it be rather hard to deck the block with the engine assembled?

Probably right, but technically speaking it is possible to grind the block w/o taking the no. off. Joe W

How is this done and is decking necessary or just advisable on all engine rebuilds? Id hate to lose that original stamping!

(I have more questions and need advice on my situation, but Ill post that on my jeep project to keep this thread on topic.... https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/new-member-project-46-cj2a_topic41246.html

As far as how is this done, with a big enough grinder it could be ground cross-wise stopping and returning before it hits the nos. Something I'd consider only on a total rebuild you can get a pretty good idea if you need to deck the block just by using a good straight edge. Joe W
