That is awesome. My first job in the Air Force was in vehicle ops, retrained first chance I got. We didn't have any Jeeps in our fleet. Did enjoy driving HMMV's and Dueces though. I didn't join until the end of '87.

Not to take over your thread but I just found this image on the server at work in the historical files...thought you would get a kick out of this circa Fall 1981 picture this would be a year after I joined the USAF. This Morton Building was know as the "Jeep Shed" I still have the sign at home removed before they repainted the building and put on a new roof some 30 years later.

the thing is the MBT, the M100 are very sought after from an historical point of view. There is some value there. The M416 is a Vietnam era trailer that is not as coveted. It is a well built trailer but lacks convenience without a tailgate. If you use the repop parts and make it look like it belongs there you will still have a good looking trailer and one with a practical tailgate. I think the M416 is more sought after for its ruggedness and its use behind a modern day jeep or truck for outback adventures than for its historical value. Just do a Google search and see how these trailers are all outfitted. You’re already 1/2 of the way there..

But....without a tailgate you won't be able to load those steel desks (or anything else that's large and heavy) as easily. Even loading / hauling firewood will be more laborious.

I totally understand wanting to return the M416 to original, with the fixed tub rear wall. I'd forgotten that the 416 was designed like a WWII 1/4-ton combat trailer, without a tailgate. The spec must have called for a continuation of the alleged "amphibious" capability. As Damar2yxr notes, you can always add a tailgate if the need for hauling topsoil or fertilizer becomes overwhelming.

That is a great looking trailer! Yeah, I'm still torn between a tailgate or not... I get it with the convenience of a tailgate. But I also like the idea of returning it to it's more original state. MY current thought is replacing the rear wall for now. If I get to the point of regretting it and wanting a tailgate, I can cut one in knowing I'm not cutting out the original rear wall. So no guilt!

Good looking trailer Dave...we had over 60 of those in my unit with a MEPP-26 GenSet in them when I joined in 1980 (pre HUMV days)

I love my M416. I just finished restoring it. I couldn’t work up the nerve to cut out the back wall though and put in a tailgate. Yours is already missing it so I would definitely go the tailgate route especially with the availability of the repop parts. It is a durable beast of a trailer.

I needed to move a steel desk from my work shop, out to another barn to get it out of the way. So, I put the new trailer to work.

Just my $0.02, but tailgates really come in handy for hauling anything the requires unloading with a shovel or pitchfork. The WWII 1/4-ton trailers were designed without tailgates to give them a better chance of floating when the landing craft stopped short of the beach. In my experience they're a pain for most practical uses.

Thanks Art.....that's exactly what I was thinking but had never discussed it or checked into it.....have passed up a few of those (primarily because I didn't need another trailer in the year. That would make it more 'doable' then, thanks for the info. |

Thanks for the info. I actually like the squared off fenders, so they'll stay. I'm still undecided about the rear wall. Don't know if I want to put in a tailgate for practical purposes, or wall it off for a more original look. Time will tell. Bed has a few random holes that have been drilled in it. But there are ZERO rust holes. The two drain plugs are still there and appear to be complete. There is no brake handle, but there does appear to be a brake cable that comes together toward the front. The indents in the front wall match the indents in the Bantam front wall and tailgate.
