Does anyone have the RockAuto part numbers for a rear drum brake upgrade?  I am doing GeoTracker discs in the front and am thinking I may be able to do the rear's easier/cheaper if I stick with drums.

Thoughts and info appreciated.

Thanks,

-Thomas

Go disc on all four corners.  Much easier to maintain.  Stops better as well.

Just for kicks, check price for all the drum stuff verses disc stuff.

Awhile back someone bought all the disc stuff for all 4 corners for under $300.00.

That's what I'm thinking.  Pricing it out it's maybe $100 more for the discs and worth much more than that in safety and stopping power.

Thanks!

But it's not like you are going to be driving fast in you 2A.

I used 11" brakes from a 60's CJ5 all around and they use standard Bendix shoes, springs, etc.

My disc conversion that uses the Geo Tracker or Suzuki Sidekick parts is running about $125 per corner after eating the core charge on the calipers including the cost of my laser cut brackets.

Guess it all depends on what you have avail at the time your installing them. More disc parts avail for all that want them versus a finite number of 11" self energizing backing plates off a finite number of mid seventies vehicles being scrapped or parted out. I installed mine back in 2000 and have been happy ever since.

Drum brakes weigh more than discs too, as I recall.  Lighten up your unsprung weight and your 2A will have so much more pep.  Right?  LOL

Actually, I've always been impressed by how peppy Ol' Unreliable really is for being so old.

I just did a 11" upgrade to the DANA 25 on my M38 Willys.  That flavor jeep used the drum over hub approach, so I didn't have to deal with pressing the swedged  studs out.  It was  darn near a direct bolt up.  Mine were purchased from Woodys 4x4 out in Oregon and are from an early 70s CJ5.  Nice kit with everything you need.
As noted many times in this thread, the 1 1/8" wheel cylinders on the CJ5 brakes have brake line entry ports that are slanted back to the rear, rather than straight out like the 9" brakes.  I chose to  eliminate  the brake hose guards attached to the top of the kingpins, and the little "S" bend steel line that runs from the hose to the wheel  cylinder.  I used the 12"  hose lines, supplied by Woody's, for  the 11" brakes  - attached from the cylinder to the steel line at the anchor tab welded to the Dana 25 differential tube.
Careful...  The brake hose guard on an M38 uses four  3/8" NC bolts, into the top kingpin (not studs like on most CJ2A's I've seen).  On the M38, the two bolts that went through the guards were 1 5/8" long, and the two other bolts were 1 1/2" long. I replaced the two longer bolts with 1 1/2" grade 8 bolts, cuz one of longer bolts bottomed out without the guard in place.  If your kingpins have bolts, not studs, watch for this variation.
Another tip I got from Woody's, to better proportion the  11" front and 9" rear drum brakes, is to use the  standard 9" front brake 1" wheel cylinder, IN THE REAR  9" setup. Easy swap.
Stops great, even with the original Master Cylinder!  Looks almost original for the Jeep Police.  A great upgrade that is simple to do, and you get more modern self-adjusting brakes, with a much larger swept area up front, where you need it.  Another little benefit was no longer having to access the large bottom 9" brake adjuster eccentrics, where they a conveniently blocked by the bottom kingpin.....   I'll still keep my specially bent and ground down box wrench in case I encounter 9" front brakes adjustment again.

A great improvement, for not much dough.

If you have the older style knuckles with the detachable king pin steering arms the 11" backing plates will not fit, ask me how I know.  You would need to convert to the newer style with the steering arms that are part of the knuckle.  Her is a link with more info on this site.

That seems to be an unfortunate side effect of having the VEC 46s using up MB parts.
I face that same issue. Cry

Noticed 4 sets of 11" backing plates which would work for this conversion on Ebay today.

All came up with a search for  11" brake plates CJ

Two sets look like CJ5 plates - Same seller - One set $50 Plus $39 shipping, other $85 Free Shipping so about same price for either. These include some parts, one looks like drums too.

One set of DJ5 backing plates - Plates only, look nice, are cleaned and painted $149.50 Free Shipping

One set of Willys Truck backing plates - $75 Free Shipping - These are manual adjustment with single eccentric.

I look for these regularly, but I already have what I need for my two Jeeps. Since these are getting hard to find thought I should post here in case someone else is planning this upgrade.

Thank you!  I needed a set for the rear, nothing critical just nice to have.  Had not looked for these in a while.

Some years ago I purchased a kit from Mile High Jeep Rebuilders in Denver.  The 11" brakes stop my CJ5 with authority, most of the time.  Like all drum brakes they do not work well when wet.  Whenever we cross hub deep water the brakes get wet and do not work.  I am not looking to replace the 11" brakes but plan on a disc upgrade on the M38.

My CJ2A had disc brakes on the front when I got it, but they were the larger Ford calipers which require spacers to clear the wheels. They worked okay, but I went with 11" drum brakes when I replaced the front axle.

Were I to ever decide do a conversion to disc brakes I would not use these Ford calipers, so anybody who wants those can have them for price of postage. Probably be cheaper to buy new rotors locally, but the brackets and calipers should fit in a flat rate box so shipping wouldn't be too much.

About a week ago I shipped two complete 9" brakes, drums and all, across country in the large flat rate box for only $21.10.

Resurrecting this old discussion. We've had a number of guys join who may find this useful. But also because I finally got around to installing the 11" rear brakes I put together two years ago. But rather than just swap them on the D41, I ended up using a D44 built with new 5.38 gears and a limited slip diff. I now, finally have nice 11" brakes all around Big smile

11" brakes were one of the best improvements I did on my Jeep.
