Should the valve guides be replaced or can they be reused with the new valves? Thoughts?

If they meet specs, I would reuse them.

I am curious, how are you determining that they meet specs?

I have a small bore hole gauge and a mic for the valves. I also throw a dial indicator for play

I'll just say new valves new guides,  thet are easy to swap in/out with proper tooling, why not begin with new.  if the budget says no then by all means wait but having gone thru the replacement  after several years I did an in chassis replacement last month.

Belleview ol skool winch soon.

My dads been gone five or six years, now.  Just this weekend had occasion to dig through yet another bucket (plastic bins, coffee cans, olive jars, lol) of miscellaneous "stuff" from his workshop... drill bits sharpened until the flutes were only 1/8" long, #2 pencils sharpened until they are difficult to hold, rethreaded bolts, cutting bits reground to suit the task, resharpened xacto blades and on and on...

Bolding mine.

For me it is because of two reasons, OK, maybe three. First I am not a big fan of replacing it just to have new. Look at all the posts where someone has replaced their working points, plugs, condenser, just to have the new ones cause them grief. Also look at the ada-omix fiasco.

Second, when removing the good guides, there is a non-insignificant chance that their bores in the block could get gouged up enough to have to bore the block to the next oversize for the guides. This is a major hassle when working with an in-frame engine. AMHIK. Been there done that (BTDT).

Third is the cost factor in cost, time, & uncertainty. The guides are working now, did the machinist, whether yourself or a hired one, get the bores to size & straight with the seats? Did they mess up the bores & press new guides in without addressing that issue? BTDT. No fun.

I am not jumping your case, I am answering your question.

IHTH, Cpt Logger.
