I haven't searched yet, I'm posting from my phone.
Will an overdrive from a T15(I think)/D20 combo fit a T90/D18 setup if I have the right trans output gear? I have a line on one, but it's a 400 mile road trip. The guy is actually selling a complete power train for a Buick V6 jeep (sans motor) for $1000, but is willing to part out. Thanks, Les |

Are you sure about that ???
D-20 O.D. would be an especially rare find. For D-18 transfer cases the main concern is tooth count of your gear set. Early 2.43 (Pre 1955) or later 2.46 (Post 1954)

Do those numbers translate to 26 and 29 tooth respectively? Let me see if I can find the picture... here it is. This doesn't look right for a D18. The top of the case and shift linkage look like a D20 to me. Edited by LesBerg - 12 July 2018 at 2:31am |

See my last for the pic. He has a complete driveline from bell adapter to brakes. From talking to him on the phone, it sounds like the axles are MB/GPW. He's holding it for one week while another guy tries to scrounge up the cash. I could do it with a long term loan from the local strip-mall loan shark, but all I really need is the overdrive. I could only swing that (buying the entire driveline) if other people wanted the rest of the parts and were willing to pay shipping. That said, if I can score the overdrive and it won't fit my D18, I should be able to work a deal with someone. edit is the tooth count in any way related to the intermediate shaft diameter, and are the 26 & 29 tooth gears interchangeable without swapping the intermediate gear cluster (I doubt this)?

From Novaks web site "The Dana 18 is the only cast iron, offset drive (meaning that both front
and rear driveshafts are in-line) transfer case found in production
Jeeps." The transfer case in your photo must be some version of the D-18

It is possible to swap D18 gears into a D20 case and to use the TeraFlex Low18 gears you HAVE to use a D20 case or a very late D18 case. The rear output from a D18 fits on the D20 case. It does look like a D20 case to me, but obviously has both outputs offset.

That was my thought. Is that the mod known as the "Super 18"? The guy was really positive that the OD unit would fit the D18 and seemed to know his jeeps. He pulled this out of his 47 CJ2A to replace it with a different setup. If this has the D18 internals, then this ought to fit if I have the correct bull/output gear, correct? |

Its a D18 but with a single shifter (later model).
A Dana 20 would have the output where the OD unit is installed |

Looks like T14 tranny mounted to a dana 18 with a single stick (super-18). You can see T14a on the trany cover. I'd say the OD on will work as long as you have the right gears. Found this on the web. "The single stick 18 was limited to a specific number of jeeps, It was
found behind a Buick V6 with either a T86 or T14 transmission. The shift
pattern is 2High all the way up, 4High Neutral and then 4low. These
transfer cases use the big hole texas bolt pattern like the spicer 20s,
the have also been refered too as "Super 18's"" |

Les, your pic shows what appears to be a normal Big Hole (large index bore) Dana 18.
Jeep used them in CJ's behind Dauntless engines. (1966 through 1971) From factory they are all 2.46 ratio. That implies 1-1/4" intermediate shaft and it has 29 tooth input gear (mainshaft gear). If someone would ship it then I would be interested in buying that transfer case myself. I prefer them more than the D18's that are built inside of D20 cases. Technically 2.43 ratio gears can be stuffed into 2.46 cases and vice versa . So know what your buying.

Overdrive mated to a T14 is only good for use with another T14.
Won't work with any other Jeep transmissions.

Yeah after a 2nd hard look that certainly appears to be a 1967-1971 T14 .
So as stated the OD (as Is ) is only good behind a T14 transmission. T14 has 10 spline mainshaft so the Warn OD will only fit 10 spline mainshaft. It's only a good deal if you want the T14 also.

Ok. It seems that the T14 is a light duty 3speed of limited value to me.
Even if the T90 is considered light duty, I would see no real benefit on swapping one light duty trans for another. Going to "fully synchronized" isn't a priority, so this looks like a pass to me. The Craigslist posting is current for Yakima, Washington if anyone is interested. Thanks for the help, guys! Edited by LesBerg - 12 July 2018 at 10:06pm |
