"How about that Iowa class Battleship 16" shell!!!!"

I've seen a few of those in my younger days!  Here I am reenlisting on the IOWA 34 years ago. I now work at the Dahlgren naval base where many 16"-50 cal guns reside.

These V22’s are made here in my hometown.  I’ve toured their operation a couple of times.  Very impressive.

Jeeper50--where did your facility get the P-39 Aircobra? They're quite rare!

Ndnchf--great shot of you aboard USS Iowa! Were you serving on her when the Turret 2 explosion happened?

No. That awful day occurred on 1989, five years later.  Full disclosure - I was not stationed aboard the IOWA.  But when I reenlisted, I was able to arrange to reenlist aboard her.  The officer administering the oath was the ship's CO, Captain Gneckow.  But the ships I was stationed on sailed in company with her and I saw first hand (and felt) the 16" guns firing many times.

Not to wander off topic, but here is a pretty good video clip of 16" guns firing at sea.

USAAF pilots summed up their "love" for the P39 with this little ditty..

Don't give me a P39,
With an engine that's mounted behind.
It will tumble and roll,
And dig a big hole.
Don't give me a P39.

Thats one hell of a hanger to see a C130 and enough height to put another on top of it and not be even close to the ceiling...Do you work at NASA?

I work on a C130 ANG Base and they can only get two in the hanger and they have a large edition to the ceiling/roof on both ends of the hanger to accommodate the tail height and just get them under the roof.

Very cool pics, thanks for sharing.

Airacobra. So says Pop. He was a coast watcher and aircraft spotter while he was in high school during the war. It's his favorite plane. He still knows them all and can identify them at a glance.    BW

It is NOT a Jeep Willys! It is a Willys jeep.
