I get excited about the silliest things.

The old dwell tach that I got in high school (1970s) with green stamps that I won in a raffle from our football team fund raiser, quit.
Found this beauty on eBay still in the box with the tune up manual.
It looks like it’s never been used.

Action is the brand of the one that quit on me. Couldn’t afford a Sun back then. Well probably the green stamp place didn’t offer anything but the Actron, but I don’t remember for sure.

No dates on the tool or box. The Tune-up manual is dated 1976.

My old sears branded sun gave up a couple 3 or 4 weeks back also. I have been using it since 1980. Silly me went to the local NAPA and finally asked where they kept the dwell tachs. I got a pretty strange look out of the counter gal. I went a couple of other places then tried google. Finally put the model no. of what I had in google and bought the same one I had on EBay. Like yours “new in the box”. It came pretty quick. The box looked a little worn but the contents didn’t have a scratch on it. The cords were still banded up. After unraveling everything I hooked it up. Then I found out why it looke like it had never been used. It didn’t work at all. I sent it back the next day and ordered one just like you have. I think I’ll like it just fine.

back in the day when I was running my 67 Chevelle street racing. My grandma for a birth day or Christmas bought me the big Sears Engine Analyzer

some where along the way I lost it.

A few years back I found one on eBay with all the accessories for a good price and bought it. Had to go chase down the manual but I got that printed up so I am ready when it comes time to tune CHUG I also picked up on of the nice adjustable timing lights.

If you have a conventional distributor you gotta have a good Dwell Tach and Timing light.

That’s what I had. I’ll save it for you. It isn’t working but the cords are good I think.

Nice Score!

I still have my Sun Tune Up Kit with the same Dwell/Tach Meter, Timing light, Vacuum Gauge, Remote Starter Switch, and Compression Tester Gauge.

I still use my Heathkit tune/dwell meter I built 45 or so years ago. Works just fine.

I see a lot of Sun meters for sale but the ads to not state what their electrical operating range is. I google Sun 7601 specifications and still did not find the info I wanted.
Looks like a few of you are using this meter. Is it designed to operate on 6 volt systems?

I just looked at my original Sun Manual for 7601. There was no voltage specification listed.

I summarize since you hook this directly to the coil, set the cyl (4, 6, 8), zero the meter it is not 6 or 12 v specific.

I further read on the web in a few different threads this should not matter on an analog meter.

Thanks for the info Art. My two lead, analog Acron meter states for 12  volt, that’s why I am looking for a meter that will work on 6 volt. The rpm’s seem close but dwell is not close.

I have a couple different meters, and have used both on 6-12-24 volt systems with NO issues, most automotive ignition systems regardless of input voltage work around 6 volts!, most 12 volt systems were either reduced via a ballast resistor, a resistor wire in the wireing harness or a ballasted ignition coil, same for a 24 volt system.

Lee you answered my next question, has anyone actually used the meter on a six volt system? Thanks.
