Though I wasn't part of the official FCT M38Mike was gracious enough to let a couple of us misfits hang out at the TDR a few evenings and even let us ride along Thursday on Iron Chest. I want to thank him and Nancy again for their hospitality. I have been taking Jeeps to Colorado for the last 20 years and this event is 2nd to none. It's all because of the hosts and the people involved. I believe flat fender people are the best around. Here are a few of my favorite pictures from the week (although they are not of FCT sanctioned trail rides).

I would like to thank mike and Nancy for allowing us to tag along on iron chest with the fall color tour and allowing us to stop by and visit for a few evenings.  The hospitality was amazing with Mike and Nancy as well as all others that were there at TDR. I would also like to thank Ron for leading us up to iron chest.  Here are a few of my favorite shots from the top of iron chest.

Magic happens in the Thirsty Dirt Ranch 4x4 and Off Road Academy Shop.  Thank you Tumbleweed for the picture of the guys who gave up their Saturday night beer drinking time to replace my transmission.  Bruce, Tiny, Joe and Mark (not pictured) take such good care of my jeep, and that takes a load off M38Mike's shoulders.

A shout out goes to Lew Ladwig who spent some time Sunday afternoon cleaning up my generator.  Some gal and her jeep have been having too much fun in deep water .....!  Likely to happen again I'm sure.

You guys are simply the best, thank you.

I think I need to go next year. It looks like you're not too far from Independence Pass. I remember going there as a kid. We were pulling a Skamper Pop-up with a '71 Suburban and came around a sharp bend. No guard rail, and a medium duty flatbed truck coming the opposite way. My Dad said he aimed for the guy's mirror figuring he'd take it off, but at least avoid going off the cliff. Our mirror just clipped the truck's mirror. There was a loud TING!. The truck didn't even slow down. One of my Dad's favorite stories.

Fred always brings some of the most interesting vehicles, in addition to his WWII Jeeps.

Where was that photo of the building with the support structure taken?  Any idea what it was used for?  I've had a framed poster of that building hanging in my house for years (consider it fine art).  Have always wondered...
Thanks!

This is from Wikipedia. The blue links are to other Wikipedia references.

The
Crystal Mill, or the Old Mill is an 1892 wooden powerhouse located on an outcrop above the Crystal River in Crystal, ColoradoUnited States. It is accessible from Marble, Colorado via 4x4. Although called a Watermill, it is more correctly denoted as a compressor station, which used a water turbine to drive an air compressor, and was originally built with a horizontal wheel. The compressed air was then used to power other machinery or tools.

The mill was constructed in 1893 by George C. Eaton and B.S. Phillips, promoters of the Sheep Mountain Tunnel and Mining Company.  It was built as a power plant for the Sheep Mountain Tunnel.  Originally it had a horizontal waterwheel which generated compressed air for miners in the nearby silver mines.  It fell into disuse in 1917 when the Sheep Mountain Mine closed.

Mike:

For those of us in Colorado, is the fire now burning south of Salida in the area we rode last year on the toll road? I know we took the highway south of Salida before we go on the trail. The news said last night over 7000 acres have burned so far. Have you been involved in the fire fighting efforts? Just curious.

Bruce, no the Decker Fire is burning south and east of Salida, down toward Howard.  Right now it's only 2 miles outside of town.  The Toll road that we drove last year, and this year, over the mountain to Bonanza, is about 8 miles west of Salida, on the west side of Highway 285 going over Poncha Pass.  This year we were able to see smoke coming up from the Rio Grande National Forest where the Decker Fire started with a lightning strike.  They currently have over 800 people involved with fighting the fire.  I'm not one of them - yet.  I am available to be called up but at this point they have not called me.  So Nancy and I just watch the smoke column billow up each day, and we see the fire glow each night from our living room window.

I have some sad news to report this evening.  I'm sure that many of you who are old time participants at the FCT will remember Jack and Barb Malone.  They were some of the oldest and first Jeepers we had at FCT.  They lived in Buena Vista for their summers and in Independence MO with family during the winter.  I just got a call from Jack's son.  He told me that Jack died over the weekend.  He had been suffering from a mild stroke that he had over a month ago.  Apparently his heart quit.

I have the address to send cards if you'd like to send condolences.  PM me for the address.

RIP Jack Malone.

Jack was a good ol' boy. The world is a poorer place without him. My condolences as well, to Barb and the family.  BW
It is NOT a Jeep Willys! It is a Willys jeep.
