I've got the Goodyear NDTs but also went with these for a daily driver tire once I get the '48 back on the road. Firestone bought from Jegs (free shipping + 10% off).

I 've really liked those ever since I first saw them on Doug Timme's Jeep.

They would probably be my choice for 'Southpaw' if they came in a 7.00 x 16.

Anybody have experience with those Firestone 'knobbies' for both street and occasional off-road use? Noise? Wet and dry grip on pavement? Wear rate?

They are fine for the street. I have had mine for over 15 years. They are "not so knobby" now. Off road, they are great. The thing that impressed me the most though was how they did in snow, they really dig in.

Thanks, Doug. Good to know. They appear to be an old pattern still made by Firestone (or on their molds) today, but I can't recall them from the old days nor can I find any period photos of jeeps (or any other vehicle) shod with those tires.

Is there a catalog number or something for those tires?  I can't find them in their online catalog.  All they want to show me is tires for a JL Wrangler.
There's a reason it's called Ol' Unreliable

They were a fairly popular replacement back in the 50s. You will see them here and there in period photos. Coker owns the molds now. The price has gone up. The last ones I bought were for my Bantam trailer about 7 years ago. They were just over a hundred each.

They look like they could work pretty well in deeper snow, but I would guess that they would not work very well on packed snow or ice.  Do you have any experience with them there?

Not much experience on packed snow or ice. I usually have a very small window to play before the salt trucks come out. Besides that our snows are usually melted after a day or two. Also, not much experience on wet roads.

Boy, I remember having knobby tires on my '47. Their nick name is very appropriate,  Gravediggers.LOL

I'll be looking for new tires fairly soon and there's lots of good info in this thread.  I could try searching for this specific thread, but to make it easier, I'll just search through MY posts for the words, "tag for tires" and it'll get me right to this thread.
