So I was hunting down why I was lacking power while going down the road. I finally took the distributor plate out and found that the timing weights were pretty much just flopping around in there. The pegs have worn into the slots and the body side pegs have wallowed out enough that the weight on the left was almost free. I'm assuming rebuilding this would require some creative machining if even at all possible. Looks like I'm going to be buying a distro soon. : ( |

Well, looks like both the weights and the slotted part are available on ebay. Maybe I will try a rebuild.

Kurt will also sell you the parts if you so desire. I think if I had that one I’d have him do it

It is a good maintenance practice to regularly lubricate the pivots, and check the springs on the mechanical advance, but very few people do this until they notice issues due to parts wearing out, then it is beyond maintenance. An example of "Out of sight, out of mind" at work here.
With that much wear, I too think the whole thing should be taken apart for inspection and rebuild. It is older than I am, and I need a rebuild.

I thought I read that in your build thread. If he just rebuilt it, how was this missed? Or is it not part of a standard rebuild?

Additionally, if you have an IAD 4008 and don’t mind waiting a while, you can source rebuild kits out of the Netherlands.

Kurt re-built a very rough distributor for my GPW three years ago. It came back looking brand new and has performed flawlessly.
