tranny spline shaft

I read that the diameter of the tranny shaft that goes into the pilot bearing is app .627 but my cj2a shaft is app .593 and the inside diameter of the pilot bearing is app .590, as accurate as I can measure. I believe this is all original. The pilot bearing guide will not  slide in the pilot bearing as it measures .630. Did the early column shift cj2a have different dimensions? Should I just put it back together and cross fingers? I believe they were mated ok when I removed the engine.Thanks, Thad
