Not sure if anyone is familiar with this July 16, 1945 newsreel, but I have not seen it before. Fast forward to about 1/3 the way through. Love the shot of Sorenson driving one off the line.

My opinion of the vid is that at least the last few frames are during the July 18,1945 gala, pay close attention to the people in the back og a truck, and sitting in a car watching the corn shelling operation as the loaded jeep drives by..

You need a copy of Fred Coldwell’s book, “Pre-production Civilian Jeeps”.   Wink   BW
It is NOT a Jeep Willys! It is a Willys jeep.

Bill:

I've been out of town for 5 days.  Thanks for posting this fabulous 1945 Postwar Civilian Jeep newsreel.  I haven't seen it before.  It seems they only had 3 CJ-2A jeeps ready to drive down the ramp and out of the factory door that day, and the paint guns had all been filled with Harvest Tan paint. :)  The only Pasture Green jeep I noticed was the sole CJ-2; all the others are CJ-2As with the higher front seats.  Great find, thanks again for posting it.

Keith, I imagine one of the first truckloads of brand new civilian jeeps was delivered to Willys' New England distributor, hence the few very low s/n CJ-2As found in that area.  The factory didn't bog down on those deliveries.  Wink

Fred the jeep I have was given to the owner. They didn't pay a cent. He was producer of the Dry Milk Show. He emigrated to the USA with an engineering degree. Vehicles were in his heart. He did shows in the area and visited the Willys assembly lines. The other show was done in NYC. He had a farm in CT.  I wonder up to what serial number were the jeeps just given to dignitaries. Or was it sporadic.  I was told by the second owner that since there was no interstate transit system they gave these jeeps to a special group of people. When there was a show in the region they would take them back clean them up and show them in local car and farm shows. Then they would go back to the owners. In fact mine might be one of the first with a civilian capstan winch. I have the original dealers invoice and no capstan winch is listed. I was told by the first owners son that it was a gift!

SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE SLINKIES, THEY ARE NOT REALLY GOOD FOR ANYTHING BUT THEY STILL BRING A SMILE TO YOUR FACE WHEN YOU PUSH THEM DOWN A FLIGHT OF STAIRS
