Decided to pull transmission & transfer case. Looks like it's been a while since this cover has been off.

So far so good.

Having problems removing transfer case lever pin.  Considering jacking front of jeep way up & sliding it out with the levers on.

 Thoughts?

Some guys drill a hole in the transmission tunnel to access the pin.. Then you can make a removable cover for future repairs.. If you run a search I have seen some pictures on the site before.

About your oil pump - without the gasket for the plate, the shaft will not rotate. The gasket provides the clearance required.

Yeah, considered cutting a hole in the tunnel. May yet do that.

Oil pump cover did (& does) have a gasket, it was the cosmoline gumming up the works

Make it like an M-38 hole/cover.  It's pretty much the ideal solution.

My thought exactly. Is there some sort of measurement or specs on hole size / location?
I'm sure I can get it close, but if there is a spec out there it would help

I drilled a access hole and bought the M38 cover plate.  Sure helps out.

FINALLY heard back from the machine shop on my block -----------------------------
   It's good!!

No cracks, bores are usable as is (standard, block has been sleeved previously). Not optimal of course, but this is a budget build. Going to get a new set of cast rings and std pistons & have him hone the block.
Replacing all valves, guides, & springs. Debating on hard seats for exhaust but probably not.

Crank & bearings -- ??-- as stated before mains look great, rod bearings worn but no abnormal wear.
Probably will take the crank into a grinder & have it checked out though. Maybe just a polish, but ??

May even have this back together by end of September.

Decided there was a bit too much wear in the bore, decided to go .030 over so I don't have to fret about it later on. Took the crank to my grinder & he thought that it would be better to machine it to 020/020 than polish... again, a little too much wear. Probably should get the rods rebuilt or at least checked for round & straightness.
Valves, springs, & guides arrived.... & yeah, if I'm going in this deep I probably should go for hard seats on the exhaust valves. Inspected cam & tappets, both look fine, but the adjusting screws are cupped. At $2.00 each it does not make sense to mess with the old ones.

 Things are moving along finally.

Well, a year later I got the '47 in the garage. A bit tight, but the pinball & slot machine are leaving soon. Plan on getting a set of the wheel dollies to make it a bit easier to access either side.
Willys distributors is shipping my rebuilt unit back on Monday, crank is done, machine work on the block in the next week or two.
Poor old '64 Thunderbird convertible, sitting there all neglected. Have had that since July 5, 1978. Last real drive was to the 1999 hot August nights event in Reno.

Got the transmission & transfer case out finally (with transfer levers attached). Used my hydraulic motorcycle lift as a tranny jack, worked great... just positioned it under the crossmember, unbolted it & it lowered down with no drama.
Had a set of safety chains but did not use them. Pushed the assembly off of the jack, put my floor jack under the rear differential & raised it up a bit & the whole thing slid right out from under the Willys.

Prior to removal I drained the gear water & sludge.  Was fearing what I would find once I opened them up.....

Inside of transmission looked better than expected. Minimal rusting, I can use most of this stuff.
Syncros were totally shot & the nub on one end if the dogs were worn off. replacing 2nd gear, cluster gear shaft, & the input shaft. Of course bearings & small parts too.
Had an issue getting the shift rails out, forgot to put the shifter in neutral & boogered up one end of the interlock pin trying to hammer out one of the shafts.
Once I figured out my error it came out easily.

Anyone have a junk shift tower with a good interlock pin (or just the pin itself)? # 642758

I have a spare 1-1/4" shaft transfer case that came with the jeep, I think i will rebuild that one to use.

Engine not back yet - this week i am assured.  No rush.

If you are going to have the tranny apart to rebuild it, this would be a great time to consider rebuilding it as a T90C.
It gives you a lower first gear, but also a wider gear span that may not be fun on the street.

This is going to be mostly a forest service road cruiser, so I think I will keep the stock gearing.

Well, have been busy the last month or two. Just finished up the T90/D18 tonight, rebuilt driveshafts, replaced pinion seals, pulled rear diff cover & inspected (looked good!, ring gear bolts tight, good wear pattern). Block STILL not back from machine shop... possibly next week but I guess it's no big deal as I still have brakes, steering, & wheel bearings to attend to. Oh, & wiring.
Picked up another T90, D18, & drivelines for backups.
I might just have this thing back on the road next summer.
