You guys will probably think I'm nuts, but I restored this ancient Sasgen Derrick winch to mount on the front of my jeep.  Its not overly practical, certainly not for offroad vehicle recovery.  But its going on my Civil Defense Air Raid Warden jeep.  So its intended purpose is more oriented towards debris removal, tree limbs or pulling Timmy from a well after being notified by Lassie LOL.

I'm getting it mocked up and will fabricate the mounts this week. Rather than use the two large-swing handles, I'll use a long handled ratchet and socket to operate it, similar to a come-along.

I have to admit, the mechanical look attracted me to it when I spotted it in an antique mall last month.  Kind of like a giant Gilbert Erector set Smile

Love that old machinery.
What color blue is that?
Looks just like my 47 2A and trying to find the right color match for touch up.

Its Rustoleum Royal blue. It's close, but not the same as my jeep.

I made good progress on fabricating the mounts tonight. Hopefully I can get them finished and painted tomorrow night.

I don't know about you, but if I had that on a 2A I'd have to try to winch the Jeep with it, just to see how it pulls.  Thumbs Up

I finished the winch tonight. I'm pretty pleased with the outcome. It is securely attached with five 1/2" grade 8 bolts and has 100' of 1/4" galvanized cable on it. The big ratchet works quite well well, but a little slow. If I need speed, a 1/2" cordless impact will do nicely Big smile

I wanted to follow up and show the cover I just made for the winch. I really don't know how to sew, but I know how to work an old sewing machine. In this case I used a 1916 Singer cobbler's machine that I rebuilt years ago.

I started with a 4' x 4' OD green canvas tarp. Made pattern pieces from cardboard and paper. Then traced out the pieces. Cut them out and sewed them together. Then installed grommets at the bottom. It's not very sexy looking, but it will provide some protection from the elements.

Sorry about the rotated photo . Not sure how to fix it.

I made it by welding an 8 point socket inside a larger socket.
