I have seen the D41 cover being described as looking like a lemon. Not a word you usually want attached to a motor vehicle, but it fits.

I never heard of a factory stock CJ-2A having a Model 44 rear axle. I would be curious to know where you got your information. Earlier CJ-2A's has a Model 23 axle up to serial number 13453. Ol' Red is a 1946 CJ-2A (serial number 64462) and she has a Model 41 rear axle. |

Jeep Police may jump in on this
But the Dana 44 first appears to have been available in 1948. Perhaps as an dealer installed option. As to if the factory every installed one who knows. The ring gear will have a stamped date on it. The axle will also be 10 splines. The 19 spline came later perhaps in conjunction with the Powerlok developed in the early 1960s.

I've got a '46 with number 62748. I read somewhere that they went from the 41 to the 44 somewhere around 62200 or 62400 i forget exactly what number because from this I can see that I should have the 44. With that said, from the cover picture in the first reply above it sure looks like a 41, and looking at the axle housing from the rear, just to the right of the cover down low is a 41 cast into a webbing going from the gear case to the axle tube~

What year is your Jeep and what is the SN? If you think it's an original 2a, then it should have a D41. D44 was never under a 2a (if I'm wrong on that - experts please correct)
But you never know what could have been swapped around over the years. My 2a has a 44 under it for example. The diff cover reference offered above is a sure bet!!

I'm going to remove the cover on the rear diff. and try to figure out what I've got. From reading I think it should be a 44 due to the serial number, but then I read something else and it must be a 41. I can't find anything in print to tell how to know from the outside, but only to measure the ring gear which I think should be 8.5 inch (I read it yesterday & already forgot)
So, what else should I be looking for?
