    Posted: 11 Sep. 2019 at 4:12pm
Good Morning,

A friend of mine recently purchased a new to him Cj2a.  The plate with the SN of the Jeep on the firewall indicates that it is a '48 however the sn on the casting of the block says GPW-9939.  It is in the oval flat spot on the block.  I am assuming this is an earlier engine than a '48?  Any information is appreciated.

With some verification it sounds like that block is originally from a GPW (the ford equivalent to the willys MB ww2 jeep)

They are highly sought after by folks doing restos on a GPW... frankly, were it me, since a GPW block isn't the original engine for a '48 anything I'd be looking for another engine for my 2a, and looking to get that block in the hands of someone that "needs" it (and put a little scratch in my pocket LOL )

If he decides to keep and run it, the major difference between what it sounds like and what it should be is the GPW block will have a timing chain and a '48 L134 would have timing gears... there are other differences associated with these...

It is NOT a Jeep Willys! It is a Willys jeep.

Move forward with this decision cautiously.  You might get inundated with Private Messages that will force you to turn off that website feature.LOL

This advice is spot on LOL...  I once posted about an RMC engine I had found (replacement crate engine for an M38) with factory spec bores and bearings, and while not "inundated" I did get PM's over the next six months from folks wanting it for their motor pool resto.  The GPW block is multiple times more desirable I would think...

Got it.  I talked to my buddy regarding this thread, and all of your input.  I believe he plans to build the engine and keep it.  I would add a couple of pics for conversational points if I could figure out how to...

The rebuild tag is cool Smile  Tough to see on my monitor, but is that date November 30, 1957?  Post Korea in Japan...  Would be interesting to learn how it made it back to the states Tongue

Others would know better, but I have to believe a GPW ESN that low would have come out of a jeep with an F-script tub... definitely cool

Yes, it looks like rebuild date is 11/30/57.  I thought it was pretty cool as well.

From the g503 "oldsite" serial number database... and my understanding that gpw's had matching SN's and ESN's

GPW 9963 DOD 3/27/42
GPW 9964 DOD 3/30/42
GPW 9972 DOD 3/30/42

That's really early...

ETA:  get ready for the PM's LOL

ETAA: just a data point for comparison:

Your buddy could buy the 1942 GPW rolling chassis with incorrect engine that is currently for sale on this page, and be halfway towards a really cool resto..... Wink

According to All-American Wonder Vol II, page 186, GPW 9921 was delivered on March 30, 1942.  The next number on the list, 10225, was delivered on March 11, 1942.  This one was likely built at a different plant and I would guess that 9939 was part of the group delivered at the end of March.  I would specifically guess that 9939 was delivered on March 30.  That's just a guess though.
There's a reason it's called Ol' Unreliable
