Does anyone know how many teeth the flywheel would have on a 48? Did they use different flywheels or are they pretty much standard?

97 would be stock for a starter that has a pilot bushing in the Bell housing. And 129 for one with an enclosed nose.

Flywheels and ring gears are standard across all years of CJ-2As, with 97 teeth on the ring gear as Mark said.

Later flywheels can also work (ie they fit the crank flange and fit the bell housing), but ring gears may have to be changed to 97 teeth to work with an original 10 tooth starter.

On some flywheels the original tapered dowel pins were changed for special parallel sided bolts, but this is not common. This involved drilling and reaming both the flywheel and the crank, so if your crank or flywheel have had this modification in the past then you will not be able to swap in a different crank or flywheel without making the same modification.

There is also a 124 tooth flywheel gear used during the early years of 3A production.   The flywheels, starters and bell housings are pretty much interchangeable across the L-134 and F-134, but you must have the correct combination of these 3 components.

...or like mine, currently a 2A flywheel with a 129 tooth ring gear to work with a closed nosed starter in an M38 bellhousing Wink

So if I have an original ten tooth starter, is it safe to say I have a 97 tooth ring gear? I am trying to have a new starter made.  Why do they need to know how many teeth the ring gear has?  Wouldn’t a ten tooth starter work?

Also would any of you be able to tell me what brand my starter is.  It sounds like three companies made these starter, all slightly different?

A 10 tooth starter SHOULD go with a 97 tooth ring gear. But anything can happen over 70 years. Your choice if you are willing to take that chance.

We would need to see the starter (a PHOTO) and most likely the part number off it.

As other have said over the last 70 years even a 1 or 2 owner Willys can have had an amazing amount of changes and work done. Part or all of which will get it farther from its original equipment.

It should have a metal tag on it.
